It works very well. If you have a lot of sanding use vinyl gloves. This method keeps the dust down and sand faster

TY for the vid. I need to sand my doors trims and repaint. The job made by builders was terrible. There are blotches of paint and particles, that look quite hard to sand by hand. I am going to try with a small electrical sander or else i will just go crazy and ruin my fingers. Not sure if it's a good idea but my moldings look much worse than the ones in this video.

@darinbambrick3543 The difference between a craftsman and someone who just gets paid for doing a job, is the attention to detail with the desire and patience to implement it into his work. Also, teaching proper technique makes for a better how-to video, and a new subscriber!❤️ Thanks for the videos!

Hi! Many thanks for this video! Which paper numer do you recomend for a wood door painted before with oil paint?
@darinbambrick3543 Жыл бұрын
Does not matter if oil or latex. It depends upon the condition of the paint. If the surface is really bad because of heavy brush marks or because there are many coats of paint over bad conditions. Then wet sand with 150 grit. If it’s in really good condition then use 220 grit. If it’s in perfect condition, you still have to sand the surface to “open up” The surface so that your new paint can “grab” The surface and hold on to it permanently. If the surface is near perfect then sand with 320 or 400 grit. Always wipe clean the sanding residue that is left over from wet sanding. Hope that helps

Thank you for the video. I have really old baseboard and some part of the baseboard, the paint fades away. That it exposes the original wood. When I sand it down, do I have to remove all the paint on the part that hasn’t fade away to match the faded area? Thanks
@darinbambrick3543 Жыл бұрын
No you don’t have to sand all of it away. You only need to dull down the sheen on the surface. Make sure that you sand at least 90% of the surface. Does that help?
@tdodo3026 Жыл бұрын
@@darinbambrick3543 yes. That helps a lot. Thank you so much for writing back.

@darinbambrick3543 Жыл бұрын
No. I use #220 grit. I buy from Home Depot because their sand paper has a wax back for the water doesn’t destroy it

2 more tips: 1. CLEAN any previously painted/finished surface BEFORE sanding. Otherwise you may be grinding dirt/grime into the old paint. 2. Hand sanding as in video is always good, but sanding sponges/pads are also good for lightly profiled mouldings- they can take the shape of the contours as they sand. Just be careful to not get too aggressive or burn-out can result as mentioned in the video.

Does anyone have suggestions for what to do when burn through occurrs? I needed to wtch this BEFORE starting my project!! Also the paint has been knicked clear off my trim in places so I think that would need similar treatment. Thanks!
@savageredbeard2 жыл бұрын
This is a little late but there's nothing you can do but smooth out the area around the burn through as to make it even with the surrounding paint, then add a few extra coats to that area. We all do it from time to time and that about all you can do, unless you've cut into the wood too deep, then you'll need to put some wood putty in the area and sand it when it's dry to even it out.
@tonyc73522 жыл бұрын
@@debddit If you won't be using primer on the entire surface before painting at least spot-prime those burn through areas.

he is mainly sanding to take the sheen of the paint to make sure the new coat sticks better but paints like oil undercoat will stick to it well enough without sanding.
@Avital44143 жыл бұрын
If you burn through the wood, do you just spot prime that area - or do you need to use wood putty?
