They opened their concert in San Francisco with this song (it's available on KZbin) and what's funny is that Currie's shredding synth is barely audible in the mix. Apparently they were afraid that this strange sound might damage their P.A. system.

They also recorded a faster punky version of the song in which Currie sounds like he's trying to saw through his violin. It even has an abstract dissonant middle part that sounds like late 1960s Pink Floyd.

Musta taken maximum balls to play at some of them venues, circa '77 on. Especially when you weren't straight-out Punk. Good on Foxx. Ultravox will always be his son, as with Cross, Currie & Cann.

Saw them nov 79 nyc at 'Hurrahs'....this was their set opener... the instrumental opening seemed to be extended, & slower like the record, there was that purple blacklight i believe, then John ambled out slowly to the mic, arriving just in time for the lead in vocal line: "i thought you by now'... more baddass dramatic impressive not possible...i was completely mouth agape bamboozed! Love them & this song smuch

This was the 2nd to last show of Ultravox with Foxx. He was writing stuff and reportedly they had to negotiate which pieces he could take with him when they split.

I was at this show, too! 2nd to last show for the band with Foxx. Some other postings say they are from this performance but you can clearly hear the vocals are NOT Foxx and they are playing material that had NOT yet been written.

Thanks for sharing. Caught them all 3 nights in Toronto, 79. So excellent, but they repeated the same set twice, telling the crowds that they were told they only had to do one set before they crossed the ocean.

I got into Uvox thru the later Ure version but Systems of Romance is the only album i play over and over these days. A reviewer recently pointed out Ure's lyrics werent as educated so when Warren Cann also left it turned to trite in the mid 80s

@John Yourself and William Gibson should get together (if you two haven't already?) because I suspect a huge affinity between you two; based on what youve both done all of which I continue to enjoy immensely ! Maybe to make a soundtrack for a new audiobook Zero History or Spook Country All Tomorrows Partys my favs - just an idea but also a fervent prayer after enjoying virtual light a delightful au-book and an inspiration
