Quite the curio, if one can swallow down the interviewer's lack of tact: "You have a legend of being a smart businesswoman!" he informs Mary Pickford, who controlled United Artists for more than 35 years and kept it alive despite the fact that Griffith succumbed to directorial failure by being increasingly old-fashioned, Fairbanks took off early, and Chaplin was never interested in it. I guess when it came to girls, "facts" became "legends". And Swanson was a bit more than a Mack Sennett Bathing Beauty; out of all her silent films, why bring that unimportant moment up? Listening to this, you'd think: Bathing Beauty during the First World War, then, almost 40 years later, boom, "Sunset Blvd." Back to Mary, Wikipedia shows nothing about a movie ABOUT Pickford, but, of course, Swanson had already basically played Pickford in "Sunset Blvd". The aging woman rotting away in a cold Beverly Hills manse, increasingly drunk and dotty, with one man-slave (irl, Buddy Rogers) to keep her company, like von Stroheim does for Swanson in the movie. "Norma Desmond" was Mary, not Gloria.

"They take making pictures as though it was some intellectual art form when it is really accidental and intuitive and emotional. And none of them seem to get that point. It's a creative art, it isn't an intellectual art at all. And I think that is one of the troubles with pictures today. They are being intellectualized, there's no joy in them, there's no romance, of course. There is no real fun. If it's a comic movie, it's likely to be coarse, slapstick, and to me, therefore, humorless. But not witty, there's no sophistication anymore in movies."

I wish I could link her comments at 9:18 thru 10:00 to every tired "Feud" related fan thread insisting on putting two iconic actresses in a perpetual cage match. Ironically, Hollywood got its way, perpetuating "the row " that never existed 30+ years after both women were deceased.

Fantastic interview with Henry Fonda. Leland Hayward I learned about in the autobiography of Slim Keith. Leland was everywhere: aviation, photography, theater, movies, Broadway. Because of his insomnia he would bake bread all night long. He was a renaissance man. Rarely do I find information about him because the people that knew him best have passed and there is no film that shows him as he was. The greatest tribute to him Is the autobiography of Slim Keith. Actually the best book about him Has to be the one that his daughter wrote called Haywire. His daughter is still alive and it might be a nice idea to have her talk about her dad on the record. He married fabulous ladies and he raised eccentric, talented , brilliant children. Thank you for this posting.

@@jordanredwine1058Especially In India, with its caste system an insulated contextual bubble. As a child she was likely called Kutcha butcha, a derogatory Hindi term that means "half-baked child.” Meant to indicate the inadequacy of the child, being neither Indian nor British, and it emphasizes not belonging to the culture or community. She chose to leave behind that existence. And you can't negate the fact that as a mixed girl, blurring race/ethnicity lines, she felt more comfortable white than Indian. And she stayed that way her whole entire life, building an illustrious career, wealth and legacy.
