My Nan king cherries, make fabulous jam as well! They were provided as a hedge, with my last house, and the dropped cherries propagated themselves quite well. When I sold the house, I brought seedlings with me and they’re doing quite well at my new place further north as well. They are a favourite of the rabbits though, so I have to keep them well caged through the winter.

Lay your chicken wire about 12 inches out onto the ground and then have it bend and go up your fence a small bit. See if that helps the rabbits to not dig under it.

Do you have a jelly recipe? We have these on our property, and I would love to use them. Colorado has a program where if you own 10 or more acres, you can buy the starter plants in bulk. We planted around 100 plants years ago that are now mature bushes and produce a lot of berries. I didn't know they were such amazing little berries!! I appreciate the information.
@YouCanToday3 ай бұрын
The only "jelly" that we make is basically juicing the berries and putting them in the freezer with honey. The amount of honey is per your taste.

Hahaha. Thanks. Apparently, that wasn't Nanking cherry. We think it might be Korean cherry of some sort. However, One Green World stopped selling it. Now we have no idea what that cherry was. I think when we purchased it One Green World made an error by saying that it was Nanking cherry which has led us to repeat that mistake in the video.
@MarcFromBerryland5 ай бұрын
@@YouCanToday Ok well that makes sense to me because while I don't yet have and cherries at my new property I did have Nanking cherries in the old garden and the whole time I was watching your video I was thinking those look like the largest Nanking cherries I ever seen. I was wonder what you were doing to get them to grow so large so now it all makes sense.

Thank you for your tips! I have had my first black raspberries harvest this summer and needed to know how to look after the plants in the different cycles. Your little chickens are adorable! 🌸
@YouCanToday5 ай бұрын
Thank you :) I'm glad our video was timely and useful. Good luck with your harvest in future year. We have just removed olde canes from our patch. New growth looks very strong and sturdy. The only tip that I'd have is to not make the double trellis. It's difficult to pick berries from the center of it. We'll be making a trellis with just one supporting line down the middle, it'll be much easier to pick berries this way.

Would a 4 foot double fence be better 4 feet apart?
@YouCanToday6 ай бұрын
Yes, I believe that should work even better! I’ve seen a farmer protecting his crops using this technique. Two shorter fences were separated and that didn’t give deer a clear spot to jump into.

The long ones did not produce that well. The berries were way up at the top of the canes and were rather dry. Next season we’ll try something new, we’ll trim them much shorter.

We are located in Eastern PA, zone 5. And we have been following your channel because we have a TON of black raspberry bushes that grow wild here at the border of our property line. We are finally trellising them up and tying them for easier harvesting next season. Last year, we didn't get to it because my little one was about 3 months old so we had our hands full. No updated video of the roots so I assume it didn't work out as well as you hoped. Scoring a couple nodes before you layer the branch works good. Also, just an FYI.. Honeyberry is not named after 'honey', though I admit it can be confusing to some. The Honeyberry name comes from the fact that the plant is a type of honeysuckle.

@@YouCanToday Yes, those wineberry plants are really interesting. They are everywhere here on Long Island, they are an invasive species from southeast Asia. They are good but they don't make good preserves, red raspberries are best for that. Juneberries/serviceberries are excellent too, I discovered them while hiking in northern Wisconsin, could not believe how good they were.

@@fredherbert2739 For some reason pectin does not work with it, I tried different types and tried adding double the amount and it still did not set properly. I did make a good "freezer jam" from it once, if I recall that was a non pectin thickener that doesn't require cooking.
