The Genets are members of the Mongoose Family in the Viveridae order, and are amazing since they can almost pass for cats or even the Ring Tailed Cocamistle, which is related to Racoons

Genets have specific dietary requirements, cage size requirements, and are never fully tame. They scratch and play bite or sometimes really bite. Most are not good with children for this reason. Climbing is important for their wellbeing and mental health. It's a necessity so declawing is not only especially cruel and inhumane for them it simply isn't possible. Rabies vaccines are not proven to work on them. They can have a non-live (only) distemper shot, but that's not proven to work either so if it bites anyone, they are euthanized, no questions asked. Cheap cat food or ferret food is not an option. They need expensive high quality foods with no additives like soy or corn. They also require live or frozen feed such as mice because they require the bone and the raw meat for their teeth. They can get very sick and die if their teeth go bad, which happens easily with poor diet. This is NOT a cat or ferret. You cannot tame it completely by hand raising it from a baby even. Their behaviors are engrained in their DNA so you have to modify your behaviors and your home to fit your genet's needs and behaviors. They WILL have bathroom accidents. They use poop as territory marking as well as urine so they may eliminate one or the other in a litter box but use one for territory marking. If you are not okay with cleaning that up in your home, a genet is probably not for you. They have sharp ferret-like teeth and even a gentle play-bite can hurt to a small child. Not recommended for children. If a small child hurt it, it would most definitely defend itself and it is their instinct to do so when threatened. For this reason, if you have other pets, they must not be of an aggressive nature. They can be very loud, so are not appropriate for most apartment living. They have specific climbing and cage requirements so you need to do your research before acquiring one. Also, they can get sick just like any other wild animal/pet and will eventually need a vet. Most vets will not treat them because not enough is known about them. You will need to find a vet AND a back up emergency vet prior to getting your genet. Even if you find a vet who will take one, not a lot is known about their anatomy so the vet will be doing a lot of guess work. If you make the mistake of feeding a cheap, unhealthy diet you will be responsible for its early death without doubt. Please just don't do it. It's not worth it. You can research all the available info on the net and still not get half of what you need for them. Don't just get the animal because it "looks cool" or because it will "make you look cool" when your friends come over. If you are the type of person who gets an animal because of what it can give YOU, you are too selfish of a person to deserve one. You should only get an animal when you feel you can give THEM a happy comfortable life where they can thrive being just who and what they are naturally. Otherwise both you and the animal will be miserable for your bad decision and the animal, who has had no choice in the matter, will suffer the most. Everything a pet goes through is a direct result of your choices and therefore it's life, good or bad, is your responsibility and your fault so please, do your best to make it good.

Yes, they normally have a tail just like the spotted version but Ginny's mother bit hers off when she was only 2 days old. She is doing fine without it though... just looks "odd".
