I was delighted to see a news story reporting Dr. Sherrick has joined the board of Farmland Partners Inc (FPI). I am a very small share holder in FPI. I would like to buy more shares in FPI, but have some concerns based on my experience with a timber land REIT. Here was the problem with the timber land company. 1) The timber land REIT had great variance in dividends due to the variance in timber prices. Note REITs must pay a high percentage of earnings as dividends each year. 2) Big investors demanded stable dividends and forced a change in company policy. 3) This pressured the REIT to sell land when prices were low to maintain a stable dividend. And they were pressured to do the opposite when prices were high. In short, they were forced to buy land when it was high and sell when it was low! Just the opposite of what a good investor should want! Is FPI along with other farmland REITs vulnerable to this same problem either now or in the future? I would love to buy more FPI (or another farmland REIT) in the future, but how does an investor know if the board is committed to avoid this problem?
