I used dvdisaster to check optical discs I left in the hot basement for 20+ years without any protection Most of them have no bad sectors despite not being in cases The ones that have bad sectors were all scratched up. They had bad sectors due to scratches and not due to disc rot. Even the ones that were badly scratched were 95 percent readable. This makes me think disc rot is over-exaggerated by m-disc manufacturers to get you to buy their overpriced discs.

How are you printing the QR codes for locations? I'm able to print sheets for the assets (which I dont actually need if im honest with the kind of things that I am storing) but cannot see an easy way to print out the location QR codes along with a label that is readable. Could you share with me how you did this (like for the box for example)? Many thanks

Subscribed for this as it hekps clarify a lot.. also does any internet connection or even a pc for that matter with windows 10 vs just a standalone dvd recorder that if still sold the dvd version of mdisc will be compatibke with? Or does a pc always have to be used... for backing up by using the usb cable that is built in [more specifically that of a HDR-CX240 sony camcorder]? This is mostly due to also having a need to back up a vhs tape of home movies from my own childhood but also to maintain is my assumption‐ unless if there is no way to ultimately play on any even if not a standalone cd player for in case of finding on beyond whatvis in an automobiles stereo.. but like indoors use on any optical disc player at least bacjwards compatible for playing bacj on any family event that may only entail having onhand a dvd player vs a blu ray or uhd/4k blu ray or even a DirectXbox console/ps2 or a Xbox 360/Xbox one or some game console in general for that is likely going to be the only way in the future I predict unfortunately people will HAVE to play a movie in physical form on..

On the Verbatim mail they talk about silver giving good initial compatibility and performance. Reading between the lines I take this to mean that if the signal that's written extends to the gold layer, you can read the disk even if the silver layer has decayed _but_ it might need an unusually good drive and come at expense of performance. Which I guess would be a good compromise for archival purposes.

Bro, I don't understand, PERF says max capacity is 24GB when 8 GB is soldered, meaning max you can insert on top is 16 GB. But you're saying I can insert 32 GB stick? Meaning it's going to be 40 GB as the result? Documentation also mentions that more changeable RAM might be supported and it all depends on how the technology is developed bla-blah, nothing specific.

I don't understand why, in (almost?) every of your video's about M-Disc, you never mention Ritek (Ridata). Milleniata, the bankrupt inventor of M-Disc sold the rights to Verbatim AND Ritek. Ritek still sells the original M-Disk DVD 4,7Gb (readable by all DVD players), and the M-Disk BD-R 25Gb only readable on BlueRay players. Both are 4x speed. I'm not accusing you of anything, but the continuous ignoring of that company (was Taiwanese, production now in China it seems). One of the places I found them was on AliExpress. Don't ask me about the quality because I might place my first M-Disc order there, now that there is so much controversy around Verbatim's M-Disk claims (BTW: Verbatim was sold to a Chinese group, not so long ago.) I would also advise on reading the multiple 1 star feedback on Amazon about Verbatim M-Discs. This was the reason I decided to take a chance on Ritek (Ridata).

When I first heard of br in the PS3 era, they said they were scratch-proof. I'm just now finding out about the m version today. It makes no sense to me to buy a way overpriced hd disc when I can just get the regular version and just keep them in a case. They last for years and are way cheaper. I had regular CDs from 10 years ago, and they still work. Some skip with music on them cause they have scratches, but they still work.

USEFUL FACT TO CONSIDER:UHD/4k BluRay Playback is only possible with CPUs that have Intel SGX which current CPUs no longer have (no matter if Intel or AMD). So, it is currently impossible to playback 4K BluRay legally (it works just fine to playback illegaly downloaded or cracked BluRays, just not legally purchased).

Chatgpt: The term "AZO" in reference to Blu-ray discs denotes a specific technology used in the production of optical media. AZO is a type of chemical dye used in the recording layer of the disc. Here's a detailed explanation: Recording Layer: In optical discs, the recording layer is the part where the data is actually written. For Blu-ray discs, this area is very small and precise due to their high data density. AZO Dye: AZO dye is a type of chemical compound used as a light-sensitive material in the data recording process. It is known for its stability and longevity. AZO dyes are widely used in high-quality DVD-R and CD-R discs and are valued for their excellent data preservation properties. Advantages of Using AZO Dye: Longevity: Discs with AZO dye tend to have a longer lifespan compared to other types of discs. Light Resistance: Discs with AZO dye are less susceptible to damage from light exposure, which helps maintain data integrity over time. Recording Quality: They offer superior recording quality, with fewer errors during the writing and reading processes. In summary, when talking about "AZO" Blu-ray discs, it refers to discs that use AZO dye in their recording layer, providing greater durability and reliability in data preservation.

First of all, sorry for the very long post ;-) I'm just here to talk about my experience with Linux in the pro audio environment. Not specifically in audio production, but more broadly in a large multi-track recording and mixing setup in a more acoustic jazz or classical field. In this area, there are several elements that are essential when we talk about equipment. (Microphones and preamps, that have nothing to do with Linux!) AD-DA converters and interfaces, Computers & OS, DAW. When you have 60 musicians from a classical orchestra, paid a fortune per hour, in the room, you must be able to have an ultra stable setup that ensures flawless recording. When you record 32 (minimum) or more tracks, a crash or computer problem of any kind is not an option. In this area, the safest systems is, whether you like it or not, Mac OSX. My latest experience with Windows 10 and 11 did not make me want to continue with this OS. (back in the old days, Windows7 was OK for the majority of the time. Windows8 is the worst in my experience). I started using Linux, first as a desktop computer, in 2017. Firstly out of curiosity, and also out of anger towards the sales policies of the 2 big IT players. (Apple is the worst company in the world at this level. “Think different” my ass!!!) Don't dream...! It took me hundreds of hours to achieve a stable and usable system in my professional work environment. If the software is easily functional, the biggest problem remains compatibility with the hardware, mainly AD-DA converters, all because of the lack of driver development. To simplify, I managed not to be worried as soon as I press Record with: Computer: _64Bits PC hardware with Intel processor. Of curse CPU & RAM is important, but not that much! (AMD is ok most of the time, but unfortunately some bad surprises happens from time to time. _Intel Macs are mostly ok. (Don't think about doing this with a previous 2010 Mac, you will quickly be disappointed). M1, M2 work relatively well, I had incomprehensible problems with the M3, and I have not yet tested the M4 which have just been released. BONE: _"Arch" Linux, in the KDE Plasma environment! The best for me even if it's not the easiest to set up. (Manjaro or Garuda are more accessible versions of the same kernel for beginners). I don't know why, but the Gnome environment seems to create problems following updates, even though it's my favorite distro, by far, for anything other than pro audio on a computer. Or maybe it's just me doing shit, I still recommend it. XFCE is not a success for me, one day ok, the next day out. I haven't tested other distributions. "Ubuntu" is also ok but it happens that suddenly nothing works without me being able to debug the problem. AD-DA Hardware: The best part ;-) _I remind you that these are large setups with a minimum of 32 converter inputs!) Impossible to test everything that exists. _My best friends in the field are: RME Audio, LynxStudio... and that's it! _Universal Audio, AVID/ProTools, Antelope, DAD, BlaBlaBla... no path to glory ;-/ Of course nothing is possible without "JACK", which bridges the gap between the Linux kernel and pro audio hardware, the biggest problem in Linux to date. “PulseAudio” is also an option but I ended up turning away from it due to lack of time to certify its stability. (certainly a very valid option!) "ASLA" is also possible but I have never tested this solution. DAW 1_Reaper 2_Ardor 3_Harrison-MixBus 3-Bitwig _Without the slightest doubt... "Reaper"! Integration, setup and above all stability!!! The few times I had crashes with Reaper, the Logs always confirmed a problem with the hardware drivers. _"Ardor" is also superbly integrated and there isn't really a big difference with Reaper but it's just that I prefer the Reaper environment. Keep in mind that as soon as you integrate VST plugins into these setups (natively or otherwise), it is more complicated to guarantee pure stability. _Harrison-MixBus is also very good but I only quickly tested their product and especially for mixing. _Bitwig seems ok too but I still had more unexplained crashes with it. As for SSD disk formatting, which remains one of the very important elements: For pure performance, I leave you with the “EXT4” format. "BTRFS" is also very good but especially when an SSD has to process a very large number of very small files. For long-term backup on linux, "ZFS" seems to be best! Used on Linux servers for a long, long time. Don't ask me more about that... I don't know... ;-P Never mind all that. It is possible to do lots of things under Linux. Of course it requires a little more effort than just having an account with Apple or Windows and believing that everything will be done by magic. If I can help, I will. Best regards.

Sorry but the video is kinda besides the point. Ok, the change in color and the change in MID doesn't prove anything. But you haven't addressed at all the point that for DVD-R the MDISC technology was clearly something unique because regular DVD-R used organic recording layers, while the MDISCs were not. But BD-Rs always use inorganic recording technology (except for the exotic bd-r lth variant), so the accusation was that MDISC now was just a brand for blu rays rather than some unique technology that gives more longevity.

Aw man, I didn't realise you have to go through all this. I thought it was just a matter of popping the disc in, dragging/dropping some files into it, and ejecting it again. That's what I remember doing with saving stuff to blank DVDs years ago, it worked just like a flash drive. In fact, you would select 'Use as a flash drive' after inserting the disc. Does it not work like that anymore? Or is that not the proper way to save things to disc if you want it to last long?
