Still love this song after so many years. And it eerily still rings true in its message today. Beware of the cult of personality and whomever has its power.

This is as good today as it was back then. While Dock of the Bay may be what you first think of with Otis, I loved everything the man sang. What a voice.

My favourite 3 other than this, are F sharp, Lullaby and Thank You God. With the last one, you have to also play the story that is as the beginning of it, otherwise it wont make sense.

Long comment incoming… lyrics to follow One of my favorite bands ever. Their album Vivid is still fire. I saw them open for The Rolling Stones in 1989 in Atlanta. Amazing! I was teaching high school history at the time and used this song to explain the concept of a “cult of personality.” The students got it better from the song than the textbook - and bonus cool points for the teacher when they learned I was using my own copy of the song. “You listen to this?” Vernon Reid is a guitar virtuoso… needs more recognition. Lead singer Corey Glover had a role in the movie Platoon. From Vivid, also check out (tho entire album is fire): Open Letter to a Landlord Middle Man Glamour Boys About the cult of personality term (from Wikipedia): A cult of personality, or a cult of the leader,[1] is the result of an effort which is made to create an idealized and heroic image of a glorious leader, often through unquestioning flatteryand praise. Historically, it has developed through techniques of mass media, propaganda, spectacle, the arts, patriotism, and government-organized demonstrations and rallies. Cults of personality often accompany the leaders of totalitarian or authoritarian governments. They can also be seen in some monarchies, theocracies, failed democracies and even in liberal democracies.

And during the few moments that we have left We want to talk right down to earth In a language that everybody here can easily understand* Look in my eyes What do you see? The cult of personality I know your anger, I know your dreams I've been everything you want to be Oh, I'm the cult of personality Like Mussolini and Kennedy I'm the cult of personality The cult of personality The cult of personality Neon lights, a Nobel prize When a mirror speaks, the reflection lies You won't have to follow me Only you can set me free I sell the things you need to be I'm the smiling face on your TV Oh, I'm the cult of personality I exploit you, still you love me I tell you, one and one makes three Oh, I'm the cult of personality Like Joseph Stalin and Gandhi I'm the cult of personality The cult of personality The cult of personality Neon lights, a Nobel prize When a leader speaks, that leader dies You won't have to follow me Only you can set you free You gave me fortune, you gave me fame You gave me power in your god's name I'm every person you need to be Oh, I'm the cult of personality I am the cult of, I am the cult of I am the cult of, I am the cult of I am the cult of, I am the cult of I am the cult of, I am the cult of personality Ask not what your country can do for you** The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself*** * Malcolm X (Dec. 1963 speech “Message to the Grass Roots” in Detroit) ** John F. Kennedy (Jan. 1961 inaugural address) *** Franklin D. Roosevelt (March 1933 first inaugural address)

We see leaders exploiting people every day. People cannot free themselves when they refuse to admit they are being exploited. It is many times easier to deceive somebody, than to convince them they have been deceived.

You are correct, in that you do not need to follow somebody if you do not believe in the message. Problem becomes people do end up following a message they believe in. All too many times when the person speaking that message, does not believe it themselves.

They've been playing since 70s but only gained pop culture fame with this song in 80s. Still their biggest hit though they've got many more albums since and a smal but dedicated fan base. They are well respected as musicians within the rock community
