In the search for what produces remarkable performances, beware of simple and easy narratives. Read JOE LINDSEY's opinion piece in Escape "We can’t yet explain Tadej Pogačar’s sudden leap" escapecollective.com/opinion-we-cant-yet-explain-tadej-pogacars-sudden-leap/

Competitors have been rigorously tested throughout this Tour, where the International Testing Agency has conducted what it called “one of the most comprehensive anti-doping programmes” ever implemented, collecting around 600 blood and urine samples through the race.

Read the article, yeah clearly the modern tech would help but a saving of 40 Watts when travelling up à 10% gradient, not convinced on that , also I assume he was putting out around 350 watts but his average watts up the climb has not been published yet. I hope there is no shenanigans going on but we all believed in lance armstrong and there was only one journalist in the cycling press that persude the doping claim. They all have skin in the game, bike manufacturers try to sell high tech bikes, cyling press relying on advertising from clothing and bike manufacturers. If you do some digging around the armstrong doping affair you will find the ICU new what was going on and for sure anybody close to the peloton new but it was in nobody's interests to let on. Plus there is an omerta in professional cycling.Saying all of that he may blow up before the tour is finished, lets see what happens.

While great climbing is about the power to weight ratio, the full picture of climbing performance is a far more intricate cocktail of elements. Since Pantani’s ascent in 1998 bikes, equipment and clothing have all made leaps forward. The question is: how much of Pogačar’s record-breaking accent can be attributed to technological developments? This analysis tries to answer the question. www.cyclingnews.com/features/plateau-de-beille-pantani-vs-pogacar-what-difference-did-modern-bike-tech-make/

Pantani’s time of 43:28 had stood the test of time, with the likes of Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador unable to come close to beating it. Pogačar (1), Jonas Vingegaard (2) and Remco Evenepoel (3) were all faster.

According to Visma-lease a Bike team sporting director Merijn Zeeman, the Dane delivered one of his absolute best climbing performances up Plateau de Beille on Sunday before he was ultimately beaten by Pogačar with a brutal attack 5.6km from the line.

Strava told Bicycling, “Since the start of the tour, Pogacar has racked up 192 segments KOMs-that’s nearly 10 percent of the 1,955 newly-held KOMs spread out across TDF riders on Strava.”

Pogačar’s climb to the summit was so impressive that even 20 minutes after crossing the line, only 22 other riders had finished. The gaps just keep growing.

Pogačar set the new KOM in a time of 39:30. That’s 14.8 mph with a VAM score of 1,863.9. (VAM measures your vertical ascent in meters per hour, meaning it measures how quickly you are traveling upward.

On this epic stage of the Tour Visma | Lease a Bike tried to dictate the pace of the battle with UAE Team Emirates and especially Tadej Pogacar. However on the slopes of Plateau de Beille, they quickly met the limit of their lineup depth, as Jonas Vingegaard was forced to attack more than 8 kilometers from the line after a strong pull from Matteo Jorgenson
