They are still government employees and as far as i’m aware, they hold special commissions, (meaning they can detain and write tickets). And the only time they are going to go hands on with people is if they notice a fight going on or if someone assaults them first. They are mostly a deterrent. Bridge Patrol Officers are Public Officers and are considered Law Enforcement Officers in the LE community. These Officers have detain and arrest powers while on duty under California Penal Code 836.5 and protected from any acts of violence against them under California Penal Code 217.1(a) Assault on a Public Official. If you assault a Bridge Patrol Officer, not only will other Bridge Patrol Officers come for back up, but other agencies as well such as CHP, US Park Police, US Park Rangers, SFPD, Sausalito PD and Marine County Sheriff's Office depending on the severity of the situation and who's closer to the Bridge Patrol Officer in danger. So no, I don't advice you to assault one or as you call it "defending yourself" and think that these Officers are less than what they really are. You may not like the outcome of your actions.

And no, they are not law enforcement officers, simply having limited power(s) to detain under certain conditions isn't a police power. Even the video emphasizes that they are NOT law enforcement

CHP is primary law enforcement on the bridge. If there's an issue they're the ones to investigate.

@@UniversitySecurity Yes, it is, given that their job involves roughing up homeless people and impersonating police, they are very much over-compensated. Most of them don't even live in the city anyway, so they're basically winning the lottery. Their pay is much better than security jobs in the private sector and you know it.

All PC 836.5 does is reiterate a power of arrest they have which would exist even if PC 837 was repealed. And nothing in 836.5 refers to emergency lights or firearms, so I'm curious which statute allows them to do that, that's what I meant by impersonating police.

@@greenelephant1231 you are mislead on a lot of information, and what security guards can and cannot do. And being paid that much for an area like San Francisco isn’t shit. I want to believe they are actually barely getting by, especially if they have a wife and kids. To live a barely decent life in the bay area you have to make around $150,000-200,000. There are private security companies in california who have lights and sirens. They can register their cars as emergency vehicles. It has to go through the County Sheriff.
