I’m sorry to say that I pretty much bake my bread until I can smell it and then check it a few minutes later… When I’m out and about I don’t use scales, timers, and rarely measuring cups or spoons… Not helpful, I know. Let me check in with a friend who uses this size of a Dutch oven and see if she times it. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

My friend doesn’t time her’s either! Although she’s much more high tech than I am - she bakes it until her thermometer reads 195-210 degrees. It seems that it’s probably 20 minutes before I start thinking about checking it…Are you baking over coals, in an oven or on a TRAEGER? 😃It does make a difference. The next time I bake in the 2 qt Dutch oven, I’ll weigh the dough and time the bake and let you know what I find out! Please let me know what you find out as well! SO much fun!

Thanks! 25”x72” I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the best dimensions overall. The toughest part, because the minivan is so much higher in the back, was how long each of the 6 legs needed to be. I needed them tall enough in the front for the taller bins to fit under the bed and tall enough in the back for shallow long bin to roll under the bed in the back. But I still wanted as much head space as possible. It also needed to coordinate with the shelving unit so the long, shallow bin would slide out under both it and the bed, while providing the leverage I needed to use the long bin as a kitchen counter in the back. The shelves needed to be the right distance apart for the bins I wanted to store on them. I hope some of that makes sense. I also made a slide out wooden counter that had to fit over one shelf and under the bed… It all actually worked out!

Thanks for finding my channel and taking the time to comment! Probably the most helpful thing I’ve found is to go to local Ham club meetings. Between local hams and KZbin videos, you can find SO much help! I started with a $25 BaoFeng radio, got a better antenna and a bigger battery and watched YT videos on how to use it. Then I got a bit more powerful mobile radio for my minivan. Then studied for my General license and got an hf radio. One step at a time. I joined a couple of different ham clubs and they’ve all been so helpful!

@PioneerGrandma
@PioneerGrandma 6 ай бұрын
It’s such a wonderful skill! Our pioneer ancestors used it out of necessity, while we can do it simply because we love it, or to use to make the most of what we have. I have a little quilt that my mother made from my baby clothes - so many years ago. 🤣 I used it growing up, then used it for my own children when they were small. Such memories those tiny squares bring back when I match the baby pictures with the fabrics in the quilt. ❤️

Luv the horse pellets for my toilet. I use 5 gal bucket. Put pellets in the bottom. Put 2 gallon bucket on top of that. Line with bags. Use attachable toilet seat with lid on that. No smells and easy cleanup and very stable due to weight of pellets in the bottom. Also use it as garbage can. And table top
@PioneerGrandma
@PioneerGrandma 10 ай бұрын
Sounds good! I put the pellets inside the bag, because they’re absorbent and deal with any odors, but having them underneath the bag as weight to stabilize the bucket makes good sense. Thanks for watching and commenting! 😃

To hold stuff on your shelves, use bungie cords. Get cords long enough that you can wrap them horizontally around the unit above each shelf that have hooks big enough to hook on the legs. I think I might use two per shelf. Or get tie down straps that you can cinch around the unit. Make sure you pack a fire extinguisher and a smoke/carbon monoxide detector.
@PioneerGrandma

Yes, you’re right. I should mention that I have, and show, the fire extinguisher and smoke/carbon monoxide detector in more of my videos. I think I’ve mentioned it a time or two but not often enough. As far as the medal shelf is concerned, all you have to do is clamp the black plastic pieces upside down and then you can do the shelf upside down
@PioneerGrandma

Perhaps mine is different, when I tried clamping them upside down the shelves weren’t secure. I had to pull everything from my minivan a while back though because someone took out the whole left side. When I get it back together I’ll take another look at it. Thanks!

I just went to Walmart and bought a 3.3L Rubbermaid container. I used a scissor to cutout an opening on the top lid. When I need to do a number 1 I just stay sitting in the driver's seat as I am then use my feet to push myself up, position the container underneath me, then go. I leave the lid on because it provides some cushion, and the opening allows the water flow to come down. When I finish I have a bottled water next to me that I pour some down my middle area, then I set the bottled water aside, then I carefully push myself up then carefully grab the container and place it on the passenger side, then I use wetwipes to wipe myself clean. When I am done cleaning myself I carefully scan the surroundings and if noone is looking then I open my door and pour the contents out and use the remaining water in the bottled water to wash out the container and the lid. I have a place in the van to lay the container to dry out. When I have to do a number2 I usually go to restroom stops but for emergency I just place a plastic bag inside the container then sit on the container and do the thing.

I enjoy all of your videos, but...I think this is my favorite. You brought so much information -- alternative ways to start fires, recipe - yumm, story about the squirrel, and Dutch oven cooking. I usually put my coals on a flat surface -- but I love the Idea of using a round surface with an automatic 3 inch wind barrier, what a great Idea. Would enjoy having a meet-up where we could all get together and cook Dutch oven style, and share a feast together. Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate all of your amazing skills in such a friendly fashion.

How sweet of you to say so! I’m learning, practicing and then figuring it out as I go! Actually, I was adapting to the situation with the coals - I usually put them on a flat surface also. The grate on that grill wouldn’t move so I just created a flat surface on top, using the metal stock pans. Plus, it’s wonderful to not have to bend over! A meetup with lots of Dutch oven cooking would be such fun! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! 😃

What weight in grams do you recommend for a 2 qt? (:
@PioneerGrandma
@PioneerGrandma 11 ай бұрын
Well, I very rarely use a scale, but I’ll be baking bread in the next couple of days and will try to get a weight for you. For me, it makes a difference whether I’m using the Dutch oven in the oven, over coals or in the Traeger… And whether I’m letting it rise in the Dutch oven or elsewhere… 🤣 I let it rise in the Dutch oven - that was sitting in the sun - and it rose so much that I ended up having to bake it in the oven rather than on the coals as planned. It ended up lifting the lid in the oven. But at least the solution to that was just taking off the lid and continuing to bake it. That would have been a real problem over coals! Anyway! I’ll split my batch this next time and weigh it. 😃
