Mr. Arnold was my Chorus Teacher back in 1981. He told us all about Billy Joel being his student. I was up on that stage behind Billy many times for Chorus & for several of the school plays. Mr. Arnold was a great teacher!😊

Such a shame that Australian students need two prerequisites to even have a high school music program. At least one rich parent, and the right postcode. Good luck if you have somehow managed to be a literate musician if you had neither of these. As far as being professional? You will need to leave.

My cousin auditioned to be Mr. Joel’s bass player when Mr. Joel was just getting started. When my cousin came back from the audition, he said “that guy isn’t going anywhere.” In my head I’m thinking, oh, HE isn’t going anywhere. Ok.” LOL. Long standing family story.

Teachers are being attacked today, some simply for having a rainbow flag on their desks. These teachers are heroes to us LGBTQs and allies. They exemplify why we all need them sometimes as much as our parents. Thanks Billy for saying thank you to the teachers in our lives. They sometimes teach us more than just the subject for which they were hired.

When I look back at my education, K-6 through masters degree - teachers and professors - there are about4 that really impacted me positively. When I think about those that were awful, and by that I mean impacted in a negative fashion, either by their insolence or just the way they discouraged their subject matter, there are about 9-10. Virtually every single person I asked this question to has more negative than positive. And that was during the 70's and 80's. Imagine today!! If my kids were in school now they would be 100% homeschooled.

Back in the day when music was still a big part of public education. My chorus teacher introduced the class to Bach, the blues, and some of the best songwriters of the day.

I had the wonderful experience in having had two of the finest music teachers in my life. Mr. William Hill was a public school music teacher who asked me why I wanted to learn how to play the Saxophone. In 1970 At the age of 9 I told him I liked the sound it produced and I wanted to play it well. I learned the art of true appreciation and lots of practice from him. Mr. Raymond Rivera my high school music teacher, taught me that dedication to playing well Is what made one a successful musician. Today at 63 I owe a great deal of gratitude to these great teachers. 30 years later I went back to my home state to find and thank them personally. Thank you to all the music teachers in the world who help to plant that music seed. 🎼🎷

Music has given a lot of us out in this world a safe space to be ourselves. It just takes one person to believe in you at the right moment and it can change your life forever. I’m glad Bill had that person back then in Mr Arnold, and I’m glad they’re still so close. Two wonderful guys with good hearts. ❤

I went to college in the first half of the 1970’s and as a member of the schools Concert Committee I was tasked with the job of escorting Billy Joel to the schools gymnasium where he was going to perform before a packed house of about 2,500. He arrived early and told me he was hungry and could I take him someplace for a burger and a beer. Off we go to the local student hangout, a tavern we called Dunkle’s. We sat down and he placed his order and then he saw a pool table and got up to shoot a few racks before we left. He was about 4 years older than I was and he was just a “regular Joe”. Couldn’t have been nicer. Put on a great show and the students loved his performance. He actually came back a year later and performed a second time but I had graduated by then.

It's funny that I remember very few names of my HS teachers. But, the names I do remember was because I thought they were awful/terrifying. The ones I absolutely depised? I can't remember their names. I do remember the person who saved me in college, though, and put me on a solid track for a career i had never even considered before. Thank you Mr. Bayless, wherever you are.
