Correct. I wasn’t quite as articulate on that point. The construction started in California in 1979, and was moved to Tokyo so it could be prepped for opening.

I was vacationing with my family at WDW at the time of the fatal 2009 monorail accident. The morning following the accident, word spread rapidly across the resort that a young monorail operator had been killed. We were all stunned at the news, since the WDW monorails overall have such a stellar safety record. I still have the "monorail operator" souvenir cards that cast members gave to guests who rode with the monorail pilot in the front compartment. Those were wonderful experiences, though it's fully understandable why the rules had to change. I still think of young monorail operator Austin now and again when I ride the monorails, and wish peace for him and his family.

Meant to also say that my monorail has dialogue from Kevin Miles, who did the spiel from 1988 until they changed in the early 00s. The switch also has spiels from that era. Realizing now that this is a vintage collection, on a future episode I’ll have to play some of those.

I love the monorail, too. And at the risk of sounding nitpicky, but the switches at the roundhouse count (though you probably couldn't catch switching operations there) and a new switch on the Epcot beam for a VERY short spur that holds a tractor in case a monorail needs to be towed on that beam. I'm sure we all wish that the system would be expanded, but it won't (beams are expensive).
@lostfoundwdw8953
@lostfoundwdw8953 2 ай бұрын
Fair enough in nitpicking. That’s why I started the discussion at the roundhouse, though I didn’t say it specifically. Yeah the tractor spur was an addition they made relatively recently; that I didn’t mention that but should have. Hey! A reason to make another video. 😁 And … the cost … that’s why they built the monorail beams for Epcot on site. The facility is still there. Just saying.

Great little documentary, there isn't as much documentation as I'd like and this helped! I would add that I doubt Mary herself painted each tile, I suspect she designed it on a grid and a team painted it. I could be wrong. Also the five-legged goat is on the gift shop side I believe, not Chef Mickey.

Thank you. I also wondered whether she did the painting herself, or maybe simply did the overall template. I don't know for sure, either way. I'll have to go through my videos to double-check the location (or better yet, visit the Contemporary!), but at the moment, I stand behind it being on the Chef Mickey side.

@@lostfoundwdw8953 She very well could have done the painting, it just seems like an almost impossible task for a single person. But idk! The only reason I know it's the gift shop side is because I'm painting a recreation of the mural, and I took the reference photo from Chef Mickey's cafe, and it's not the side with the five legged goat XD I've studied it a lot, and I just doublechecked. Unless it also has a five legged goat, idk. Either way, nice video!

I'm so glad I came across this video. Growing up in the 70s and 80s my family went to Disney every year, and I loved the House of Magic. I looked forward to going there as much as any attraction. I still have things I bought there -- my first "real" cups and balls set, a change bag, a few books, and probably a few other items in the bottom of a box somewhere. It's where my curiosity about magic turned into a lifetime passion. When I went back to Disney as an adult in 1999, I was more disappointed to find that the House of Magic was gone than I was to see that 20,000 Leagues was no longer in operation.

Wow! I notice you had to have a hand stamp to reboard. Was the monorail considered to be “inside” the Magic Kingdom in those days? Guess they had to change that and move the turnstiles to make the Monorail external to the parks when EPCOT opened in ‘82?

It was actually a different hand stamp. I believe it was a monorail or something. While the theme park was a character(varying by day) But they did move the barriers and entrances sometime in the 80s, so you didn’t need a monorail handstand anymore.

Even though “spiel” does have an existing definition in English dating from the late 19th century meaning “long extravagant speech” or a “sales pitch”, the actual reason may be due to the German design of the original Alweg monorails at Disneyland. There was a button labeled “Spiel”on the driver’s control panel, German for “Play” which triggered the next announcement cued on the tape loop.

@lostfoundwdw8953
@lostfoundwdw8953 4 ай бұрын
I can remember the words TTC being in use in the early 80s. As to why, my best guess is that when they got into the Epcot build, they changed the name; the original plan was to have everyone park in the main / Magic kingdom parking lot and select your destination. Of course, they changed the plan and built an Epcot parking lot. But that was still the hub for transportation. So it wasn’t the “main entrance”

I didn’t specifically call it out. I wanted to talk about the history of the associated legislation. But for context, when the state “changed how Disneys improvement district runs” or perhaps “took control of Disney” - they actually only made two changes. The name changed and how members get elected was altered (some are appointed, and they no longer come from the two cities where employees live) Yes that does modify how this all works to a point. But it’s not at all like some would have you believe.

Lucky you! Interesting. I had always heard it was 3, with a max of 4. But it would make sense for it to be 4 when it’s busy. As an added thought, even before the grand Floridian, there were 4 stations so all trains could be stopped at a station for safety reasons. (Always a consideration)

If WDW rolls out a new fleet of trains, I have two requests: They need to retain the look of the existing trains (the white with strips is an icon of WDW, while the solid colors can stay at Disneyland), and the "Please stand clear of the doors" recording must be preserved. It's not the Monorail without it.

The current monorail fleet at WDW is 15 years PAST its life expectancy. Their were wild rumors (even supported by Bob Gurr) that Disney was going to replace the fleet. Their were hopes that part of WDW 50th anniversary celebration in 2021 would showcase at least one of these new drains, but with the 2020 pandemic and Disney bleeding money, nothing eve came of it. Now, the WDW monorail system is in many ways a hot city bus, with the same amount of dirt, grime and odor.

1971 Kissimmee was not ready for the Diz employees looking for housing, let alone tourists. A true cow town. Kissimmee reminded me of Council Grove, Kansas. You really really have to look for the cow town roots today. On 192, the only building that I recognize today is the Lutheran Church. It sat so far back in it's property that it's still there. If they add another lane, it will be gone. That is where you turned to Tara Apartments, which is still there as of a couple of years ago. Or 2 years ago, when a manager took us behind the entrance level façade and showed us part of the remaining orange tile wall that lined the original port cochere, before the lobby was extended outwards to encompass the old drive through check-in.
