Rewatching for inspiration 🙂…would you be able to do a flip through the evolution book. Also interested in any books you have on the history of the earth and it’s creation. I am a Christian but complicated, I believe the earth is millions of years old and I do agree with much of the evolution theory in terms of its creation and with micro-evolution explaining how life has changed. Would be really interesting and helpful to glean some insight, it’s not a lot I hear about, but always feel unsure how to teach this, and which resources are good to teach from in a literature picture book method, rather than using textbooks.

It has the answer key in it and also the passages for dictation. For the simplicity of not having to look through the passage yourself to check, they didn't miss anything, I liked it. It depends on their level. For the upper levels like E, there can be a lot to mark, so it is definitely easier to have the answer key. If you don't mind going through it all, then you could try without it and see whether you want it later. I have always got it, but I have used it the most in the upper levels. Thanks for watching.

I used it for the first time this year and mainly used it for the word study aspect. I am using it again for the new school year as a supplement. I haven't used it enough yet to see whether it could be a standalone as I haven't seen any of the earlier levels to see how it progresses, etc. At what I have seen so far, it is a supplement, not a standalone program. But that is based on my limited use.

Thanks so much for sharing. Just when I thought I had all the curriculum sorted, I am second guessing writing for my older child. Did you buy from iew directly? I see Conquest books sell this, but I am a bit worried about purchasing from them again after I bought MuS zeta which was like seriously out of date! It was all new looking, but had a good number of errors in the answer key and it was coil bound which changed eons ago to a bound book. Would love to know where you buy yours from? And I haven’t completed the teaching course for s&s course. I started to go through it, about 2/3 years ago when it was a Xmas gift. If I purchase it, can I go through it video by video as my child goes through the program week by week? I don’t think I have the patience to listen to it all in one go, 🫣. I’ve been putting off iew for years, 🙈 but we need some clearer writing instruction, and I think my son might like it, and perhaps I will too. He is is 11 1/2 currently and I am considering 1A, how does that sound to you? Too young? The 1B source texts look a lot longer, so because he’s not done this before, the 1B texts might be too much, not sure. Is 1A spoken in a way to younger kids, might it feel to young? Or should I go to 1B. He’s bright, spells and write well, his comprehension is more where he struggles, in terms of inference. What is the progression of the courses, say if in a perfect world, a student did every iew from the beginning? Is it, 1a, 2A, 3a then moving to b? And 1B, 2b, 3b and then onto C? 1c, 2c and 3c. I’ve tried looking online but can’t get my head around it, 😬. Is it quite hands off, with teaching also my 8 1/2 year old too, it’s a lot to juggle, so wondering how involved and any tips. Would love a flip through of iew 1b s&s please. Thanks so much, and apologies for the heap of questions, x

I purchased from conquest. No problems with the editions. All brand new and up to date versions that I received for IEW. I did do the course. You can definitely do it by unit for the twss course if you prefer. I don't think you have to do the tsww course to do structure and Style. I think for the thematic units you do. But if you watch the videos with them, you get the idea of how to do everything. He makes a big thing about them finding their editor to check their draft, so unless you have either watched the video or read all about the checklists, etc, you might find the course useful for that aspect. Again, I think you can figure it out, but if you decide against doing the course, maybe watch the first couple of lessons to understand what they are doing. It is 1a, 2a, 1b, 2b etc. The source text gets longer and more challenging to read with each level, plus the amount they write increases. For 1A, it is 3 paragraphs, 2A, they go up to 5 paragraphs etc. The source text in 1A is a mix of fiction and non fiction. It is shorter at first, but gets longer as they work through. 1A didn't feel young to me, I think the technique, etc, is quite skilled, so I don't think it is too easy. I did skip 2A and go straight to 1B. On their website they offer a sample of each level. I would watch the video of the level you think they might do and see what you think. The kids in 1b are definitely older in the class videos. I would consider meeting them half way with 2A. But if you decided to go for 1A, you could always skip 2A like I did and go straight to 1B next year. Also I would email them and ask their opinion. They are super knowledgeable and really helpful. I will definitely post a flipthrough of 1B soon. 👍

@@TheLearningLadder thank you, I wasn’t sure if we could jump into 2A not having done any before or any 1s. ? A few videos I have watched, I think it was Carla Cannon, said to do level 1 if you haven’t done any iew before, so I was thinking either 1A, or 1B. That’s really helpful about seeking out the editor, I think I’ll get the teaching course, especially if it ends up being successful, I’ll probably need to understand it, but I’ll try and watch a bit ahead of time before each lesson. How hands on/off is iew ss? Some say it’s pretty intense and others not so much. Would you say it’s an enjoyable program for most students? Writing instructi programs are so hard to find a good fit, well for us anyway, 🙃
@TheLearningLadder
@TheLearningLadder Ай бұрын
@jessicajones611 When I asked them whether it was OK to skip 2A and move on to 1B, this is what they advised me. "Typically we recommend that families stick to our progression for the SSS courses: 1A, 2A, then 1B, 2B, and then 1C, 2C. This progression is designed intentionally, offering incremental increases in challenge and new concepts are gradually introduced over the span. Year 2 of each Level acts as a bridge to Year 1 of the next Level. However, we do understand that there will be exceptions. With your students having a larger foot into Level B (6th-8th grade reading level), we do want to look into this further with you. "If they completed SSS-1A easily, and it was very basic for them, you can consider moving ahead to Year 1 of Level B (SSS-1B) next. However, if they struggled at times with SSS-1A and it was a good challenge for them, then you would want to continue the progression and choose Year 2 of Level A (SSS-2A). SSS-2A will add longer assignment lengths, research essays and formal critiques from Units 8 and 9, and additional sentence openers - slowly prepping them for Level B. By sticking with the progression you would allow them another year in Level A to practice our new methods, without them becoming overwhelmed by a jump straight into Level B. And, there is plenty of time to fit each of the courses in and you do not need to feel rushed." In terms of hands-off for you, he does a good job of explaining everything to them. We have only done 1A so far, but he really breaks it down for them. For the first few in 1A, he would always read the source text with them, and they would do their keyword outline together. After a few times of that, he would read the source text and then have them pick their key words, but then go through it as a class with what kids picked. Then he moves just onto reading the source text, explaining any new concepts and they write their own keyword outline alone. He always reads some of the kids turned in work at the beginning of each class too. So your child can see what others wrote. I imagine 2A would be similar but would probably go a bit faster. I did enjoy the course, but I'm biased as I love writing, and I found their process interesting. But I can see how it wouldn't be as interesting too. You could always get the course after if you think you need it, save wasting money if you don't need it etc. I think I bought the premier one from conquest that included it plus the word walls etc. I justified the possibility of not enjoying it with, I was getting the word walls, which were 50 ish separately, so it wouldn't be that bad if I didn't enjoy it, lol. Re kids enjoying it, I would watch his sample video with your boys and see if they like his style, etc. My daughter likes it, but she enjoys writing, so it isn't a fair review if a child didn't. She does like to change his assignments a bit to suit her, but I am fine with that as long as she includes his required elements. I think it can be a lot. The videos are long, but we just split it up over two years. I did it several years ago, though. Now, I will still spread it out over the school year and not try to complete it in 24 weeks, etc. If it takes longer, I'm fine with that.

What is your average budget per school year?
@TheLearningLadder
@TheLearningLadder Ай бұрын
It depends year to year based on what curriculum I pick, whether I make my own resource or buy additional things like games, furniture, etc. Generally, I set aside a monthly amount for homeschool and then use that for sourcing used books, curriculum sales, etc. Once I have decided on my curriculum, I add to it if needed. On average, the past four years, I have made a portion of our curriculum myself. That brings down how much I need to spend. I have also resold the curriculum we had finished with previously. This year, I didn't make my own resources or sell any curriculum. I picked a literature based curriculum option, which is often more expensive. I sourced a lot of the books used, which really helped, but my spending this year was higher than last. I have found it is more expensive to start with, goes down for a few years as you have built up a stash of resources, so to speak, then goes back up again for the higher grades.

As you have done both the elemental science and the Harcourt book, I wanted to understand, which approach do you like better? I saw you have also done TGTB science units in the past...Reason why I ask is I have ordered Harcourt book for my 4th grader for this upcoming school year. In the past we have only done Evan moor daily science as a morning daily 10 mins science thing and in the evenings, the days we have science scheduled, I have used Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) interactive science textbooks for the grade level or the free Core knowledge science units. But as she is going to enter the upper elementary years, I am in doubt, if I should be doing just Harcourt at the grade level or mix it up with elemental science for grammar stage with it.... I am so confused. I also keep looking at the TGTB science units. My daughter really likes the kinesthetic approach to studying. So I would love to incorporate that in our cycle. As you have precisely done and tested every one of them, I really wanted to know your thoughts on: a) Is doing Harcourt book alone sufficient and deep enough exposure for science? B) is it feasible to may be include Elemental science's classical series into the same grade level or should I just stock to one.C) Do you prefer one over the other? D) How has the progression for science been in your family starting from elementary to now middle grade level? Which curriculum did you do through the years and if you had to change anything or add anything ,what would you have done differently? I am so sorry I know this is such a long question. But I literally feel lost and need guidance and advuce from someone who has gone through this. Let me add, I live in Sweden, so that just makes buying and recieving curriculum way more difficult. If it isnot available in pdf or in amazon, I have no way to access them.

We used elemental science for the introduction, biology, and Earth science levels. I really liked it. I feel it is a strong curriculum and includes experiments, which is really important for us. I decided to try a different curriculum after the Earth science level, and Harcourt was a good option at the time. I only had the textbook, so I had to make my own worksheets to go with it. The difference between them is that Harcourt is full colour, and all the text is in the book, and it covers a bit on all science areas. If I were to pick a favourite between them both, I would choose elemental science. Mainly because I didn't need to make anything to go with it. You could do a combo of the two, but there are lots of extra fun things you can add into Elemental science that she offers as extra activities that are hands-on. So if your child enjoys that, there are many more opportunities for hands-on things in Elemental. Tgatb is unit study topic based. It is also open and go. I do like their units for interest led topics. I have never done a full year of just tgatb. They have always been used to go along with something else. All are solid curriculums. It just depends on how much your child wants to do and how much extra you want to add yourself. I would categorise them as follows: Open and go, interest led topics- tgatb. Solid science with experiments and hands on activities, Elemental. Textbook based reading in colour but requires either a workbook in addition or you to make your own assignments, Harcourt. You could also use the Harcourt book as independent reading if you wanted to use multiple options. Hope that helps.

We have used MBTP for a couple years and incorporate it into our eclectic approach. My daughter loves the unit studies. It’s extremely underrated in the US. It’s nice to see someone in the UK using it.

Yay, lovely to see things taking shape. Your husband is a trooper, with all the driving. Do hope your cold is over really soon too.

Thank you! Worst time to get sick for sure but I'm ploughing on. We have to do the cost analysis to see if it was actually cheaper to do it ourselves. I had wanted to hire movers but he wanted to do it himself as it would be cheaper. I'm not sure of that now as petrol alone for the van has been 700 plus. It is a diesel hungry van. We have for sure learned things along the way. I think I will make a video about everything we would have done differently. Hoping not to move again though for a long time, if ever.
