I'm a little confused about the HSA being a mistake. He (61) has us both on his company's insurance, which is an HSA. $88/month for both of us. I (65) am on Medicare part A, and my part B, vision, and drug plan is his company's insurance. I go to the doc for annual stuff and take HRT meds. No way I will ever meet our deductible because he never goes to the doc and won't take any drugs. (My biggest expense this year was for dental repairs and implants after the donkey kicked me in the face.) Husband and I think that the tax savings and investment from an HSA is the better choice.

Maybe some of us aren't so arrogant as to think we'll live till 80. That's how long you have to live to make up the difference...plus, SS shouldn't be your only source to support you.

Go to the Hospital and do a Sliding Scale depending upon his income. Everyone knows when you have an EXORBITANT AMOUNT OF MEDICAL DEBT, you go straight to the medical Billing Department and show them your Tax Returns for the past 3 years. If he’s lower income that $47,000 will be probably lowered by 3/4. That’s exactly what I did. They looked at my income and reduced it my amount owed by 75%. And I made Payments. Please give people OPTIONS. I’ve noticed that you’re not exactly telling or giving people “options”… That they absolutely can take advantage of…. Charity is a Real Thing that low end income individuals can apply for. I hope you call back that Gentleman and give him this option….

Does that include earnings from stock and investments, Pensions , 401K Roth and Traditional and active work?

I compared and the group insurance through my husband was a lot less expensive, plus the cost was pretax, which reduced our taxable income..

Negotiate with the hospital, they will cut it to 50% or less and set affordable monthly payments with zero interest! Also hire a medicare bill review. Most likely, the bill has all kinds of "mistakes"!

It amazes me how people can get retirement age & are clueless, broke & never bothered to try & educate thereselves on what they will be needing insurance wise to be covered. Theres a medicare assistance office in nearly every county & of course all the flyers that are sent to you when retirement age is nearing. So sad

What the heck happened to result in a $45,000 bill? Presumably that’s mostly Part B costs, and that’s a lot!

Question, when you are working at some point, you're given the choice on when you will retire. 62, 67 or 72. What about the people on disability. Are they forced to take the earliest possible retirement this could be a huge financial loss for them.
@tamarac22675 сағат бұрын
It is my understanding that if you have SSDI, you are already getting the max amount you would’ve gotten by waiting until age 67 (full retirement age). When they change you over from SSDI to social security at retirement age, you will get the same amount.
@tamarac22675 сағат бұрын
*based on the amount at the time you became disabled, not on what would’ve been had you contributed to work and pay in. Just thought I’d add that for clarity. 😊

If your income is low enough you can apply for financial assistance at the hospital. If your income is moderate you may still qualify for some assistance.

I have Medicare A&B but now they tell me I have to pay a premium for Medicare B, which they take a chunk out of my ssdi that’s going to be bad, but what they told me was I can always apply to get assistance through something called MA -PED or QI program? Do u know how those programs work!
@tamarac22675 сағат бұрын
Apply for Medicaid through whatever state office handles that in your area (usually Dept of Human Services or something similar). Depending on your income, you may qualify for more help than you expect. A close friend gets her part B premium covered. I don’t get that, however I still qualified for extra help with prescriptions, and that made me eligible for a dual coverage Medicare advantage plan. So I will have no other out of pockets expenses outside of the part B premium. I put off calling fit months, because I was afraid of the answers. I was pleasantly surprised! Best wishes! 💕

How does it work if you worked a short while and became disabled so you had a smaller size check but now are full retirement age, still a fairly small check. will there be any additional benefit if the spouse dies? his benefit would be more than double the amount the disabled wife has been getting.

this is the failure of the american health system that you work all your life, pay house, cars, school loans and try to save and live a decent life and still gotta give all your m oney up and still depend on family cuz 30 dont pay for anything and the food is crap in nursing homes and they dont want to bathe you daily plus they steal your stuff. When I went to pick my mom up when she died, they had ransacked her and was only left with pictures, a spray she wore and some clothes when she had a tv, boombox, dvd and lots of other stuff i purchased for her.
