Ballz 3D. Brings back memories from my internship days at P. F. Magic. I remember working on images for the strategy guide, which, I believe, was never released. I also did a small stint of QA on the 3DO version, before being moved to the art reference department. On my breaks, I'd end up playing on the Sega Saturn dev kits. Games like Virtua Fighter, Panzer Dragoon, Cyber Speedway, or MK II on the SNES. This company was trying it's best to develop the next big fighting games and innovative titles.
@nicksrandomreviews2 күн бұрын
That's actually pretty cool to hear. I was quite impressed with the idea of Ballz 3D, and its incredibly ambitious for a 16-bit game. I always wondered what happened to the 3DO port. It actually does look a lot better than the other versions, and I know that there's a playable build somewhere online, so maybe I'll give it a shot for a future video.

Fight Night Round 4 takes a lot of practice but once you learn how to really play it, aw man. It's the best one by far!
@goodlookinouthomie175716 күн бұрын
Controversial opinion but I have enjoyed Round 4 the most out of the three titles on the XBox 360. I liked the controls and didn't really feel like the blocking and head movement problems you described were an issue. Although I do agree it all heavily leans on the counter punch mechanic. Also the minigames I did agree to begin with they are annoying and onerous. However I put quite a bit of time into practicing them and ended up being able to get champion level almost every time. Even on the push bag one which is frustratingly luck based. The main thing that disappointed me was toward the end of my career around 40 fights in, I had won all the belts available and suddenly my opponents dried up. I pushed through to 50 fights to get the GOAT achievement but to do so I had to fight the same half dozen guys over and over. And these guys didn't seem to be fighting anyone else since their last 2 or 3 fights were all me. There were no new challengers and no new fighters appearing for me to book. I compare this with Round 3, where I was able to keep fighting new challengers indefinitely until my fighter got too old (I retired him in his early 40s after over 60 fights). So you're going to review Champion next which everyone raves about, but I am having a real hard time getting into it. They really dumbed down the controls. Anyway I'll look forward to that next video as I'll be very interested to see if we agree on some things about that or maybe I'm missing something.
@nicksrandomreviews16 күн бұрын
@@goodlookinouthomie1757 I am really glad to hear that you enjoyed Fight Night Round 4. That's the one I've heard people rave about, along with Champion, but I feel both are in the same boat as the Final Fantasy games, where some people say 7 is the best, and others cite the gospel of 6. Personally, I felt Round 4 is a slew fine game in many ways, but does a lot of small things that irk me, that just build up. I don't have an issue with its ideas, but I don't like how a lot of them were executed. I do however like the career mode. I give a lot of flak to games for making career mode a series of menus, but what I really mean is that those career modes tend to be a series of menus that don't really require you to think about your choices, whereas Round 4 feels like your decisions outside of the ring matter almost as much as the ones you make in the ring. I am really looking forward to reviewing Champion. After that, I want to cover the less simulation boxing games, like Ready 2 Rumble, and Facebreakers.

Great picks, but I'd argue that Pit Fighter was not one that time forgot. It's well known and remembered for being as bad as Street Fighter 2 is good. I'd have probably replaced it with something like Ballz 3D on a list like this. It's quite bad, but not memorably so.

@@jeffb.6642 The issue with Clayfighter is its a solid elevator pitch of a game, where its "lets parody the gore and violence of Mortal Kombat, in such a way that nobody could possibly get mad at it", but then it has absolutely no actual mechanics behind it. Ironically, I feel the N64 ones are a lot better than the 16-bit ones, due to the fact that there's actual mechanics and systems in play, and its actually a somewhat solid fighter with a lot of flaws that could have been ironed out with a sequel on different hardware.

@@goodlookinouthomie1757 So yes, and no. The TPC saw steady improvements as the games went on. Despite sharing a name, the controls in Round 3 feel a lot more accurate. Whether or not its due to the 360's more responsive sticks, or EA just fine-tuning things on their end is anyone's guess.

4:51 100% right. The EA games feel like soulless husks compared to undisputed and have been dropping rapidly in quality since EA UFC 3, but they definitely do better with submissions than the undisputed series. Good example is ufc 4 where they use pretty much the same cat and mouse game as undisputed for chokes, but a different version for leg locks and armbars, while also giving opportunities to chain the submission into a new one. It does actually add variety to the gameplay if you decide to lean heavy into submissions.

@@brendan9868 I would say 5 is a good game. Not great, but good. 4 is...we'll get to that eventually. I'm sitting on at least 3 different drafts for that script, and want to get my criticisms just right when I discuss it. Soulless is probably the word I would use. 3 and 5 feel the least soulless to me. 1 felt like "we are contractually obligated to make this", while 2 is better it still isn't perfect. 3 seems to be the magic number for UFC (unless you put another 3 right beside it, as UFC 33 proved).
@brendan9868Ай бұрын
@@nicksrandomreviews I haven’t really played 5 beyond like an hour long free trial that was just bugged beyond belief, so I can’t really speak on that one lol. 4 is definitely super flawed, really only brought it up because of the cat & mouse subs comparison it has with undisputed 3. It’s annoying cause I do think EA is capable of not just making good mma games, but just good sports games in general. They just always shoot themselves in the foot and release the most unremarkably average games possible then put all their resources into ultimate team and other online modes
@nicksrandomreviewsАй бұрын
@@brendan9868 The free trial is completely broken. The camera sucks balls though. Not sure how EA messed that up, but they did. The rest is solid. Which do you like more between 2 and 3? 2 is more fastpaced, arcadey and freedom to choose who to fight in career mode but is limited to just 3 styles and overpowered haymakers. 3 is slower, limited in choices in career and...Burger King but there are more varieties in fighting style you can choose for your fighter and you can't spam haymakers like 2.
@nicksrandomreviews3 ай бұрын
@@xitrum1902 I think 2 edges 3 out JUST slightly. Like, if there was just one more thing wrong with Round 2, I would easily put 3 above it. The two are fairly equal in what they set out to do. I don't even think 3 is all that much slower than 2, if it even is. In a lot of ways, it feels like 2, but better and more polished. I think 2's career mode is a more enjoyable experience than 3's, and since that's what you'll be spending the bulk of your time doing, I do have to put 2 ahead, even if its only by a small amount. Its a really hard choice, though.

The ending to X5... They should have played it all the way like Dr. Wiley was alive and pulling the strings. However, once you beat him, as he falls to the ground, it is revealed that he is a robot. He was nothing but a pawn in a much bigger game for control that has gone on since the very first game in 1987. No, the big reveal should have been Dr. Lite as the big bad. Once the player finally sees Dr. Lite for who he really is, the game goes into a cutscene that begins with the Nes game. Dr. Lite used Wiley to make Mega Man the most destructive robot in the universe. Dr. Light allowed his "peaceful robots" to be taken so Mega Man may sharpen his skills and his technology improved to an indestructible sheen. Have Roll and Rush join against Mega Man for one final throwdown... unless he agrees to join Light in world domination. Addendum- I am aware, Dr. Lite should be dead. However, he could be in stasis somewhere and in control of robots with his mind. Choosing to go against Light would have you smash the machine. In a terrible twist of fate, Mega Man dies while killing Light. Credit roll.
