I’m wondering why G here is 7?
@somethingyoulike9153Ай бұрын
G7 has B and F, and the interval of them is a tritone, which sounds unstable. So G7 resolves to C major more nicely than G major. I'm not used to writing about music theory in English, but I hope it makes sense.

I'm curious how do you know that in the key of C, 2/3/6 are minor cords, and would 2/3/6 be minor chords in a different key as well like the key of B?
@somethingyoulike91532 ай бұрын
A major chord consists of a root note, a major third, and a perfect fifth, and a minor chord consists of a root note, a minor third, and a perfect fifth. So the only difference is the third note. The root of 1 is C and the third is E, which is the major third. The minor third is E♭, which is not in the key of C. So 1 is a major chord. The root of 2 is D and the third is F, which is the minor third. The major third is F♯, which is not in the key of C. So 2 is a minor chord. This is not just in the key of C because the intervals between each notes in a key (accurately a major key) are always the same. Since I'm not used to writing about music in English, this may be strange, but I hope you get it..

OK, this helped but how come I see chords in a certain scaleincluding notes that are not of that scale?
@Ducksaregreat2 ай бұрын
All this time I spent struggling, trying to figure out how scale coords worked, and the solution is literally just every other note? I'm a little annoyed, but so relieved and happy that I know how it works now.

I’m using this for my guitar chord progressions and then expanding out from there. I wish I could be in this class! Thank you Karen!

How can one apply this logic to tritone substitutions, secondary dominants and all the other non-diatonic mechanisms that can be used to enhance a progression? Great video. I wish I’d had her all four years of music theory from ‘98-02.

Hi, I watched your lesson on "Determining chord progressions in a song" and I liked it very much thank you. I'm having a problem with one major thing. You used the key of C and showed how to find the other chords. My problem is that I wrote a song and sing it acapella in the format/shape that I like, but I'm stuck at creating a melody and chords for it; I don't know what key my song should be in. I want to learn how to do this without depending on software programs online because two different ones have already given me two different keys that are located far from the cycle chart, like one said the key was Cm and the other F. I want to know how to get the right key for my song and appreciate any help/tips you can give me. Thank you.

she definitely explained this all much simpler to understand, but could someone explain to me why she started with Bb in that second scale and why she does not care about diminished chords?

I was always taught that if you go clockwise its the circle of fifths. You go counter clockwise its circles of fourths. Am i missing something? Or did she just flipped it backwards?

So, what about the 4 nothing leads to 4? You can choose it from the root but then it only goes to the five and/or back to the one. So 4 is mostly used in only 1,4,5 progression’s?
