Interesting that the PON fibre runs to an ONT integrated into the VM Hub instead of a separate ONT on the wall with Ethernet to a router. Pros: one less powered box, and easier for VM to upgrade to later PON variants in the future. Cons: lots of fibre connectors (3) in the signal route causing significant attenuation, plus inflexibility in Hub/router placement as you're stuck with the VM fibre cable between wall plate and Hub instead of a generic DIY Cat 6 Ethernet cable. Also a wall mounted ONT provides a convenient copper Ethernet socket demarkation point allowing one supplier for the fibre service that stays with the house, and then customer selection of a separate retailer for the internet/router/WiFi service. Not that VM have to worry about this for now.

Yeah pros and cons to this approach like you say. If you see my other video you will see how I bypassed the VM Hub and plug the fibre straight into my gear and which gets over the con of having to be stuck with the Hub 5x. Once Nexfibre go properly wholesale and open it up to other providers they will provide a proper ONT.

Would be good if can find some cheaper alternative modules to do this with. These WAS-110 SFP+ modules are seriously pricey compared to rhe majority of modules. Does anyone know if these modules are compatible with HeyBroadband FTTP? Also if compatible with Ubiquiti EdgeRouters?
@nsmmedia
@nsmmedia 3 күн бұрын
Hi WombleUK, I’m all for saving money and getting a bargain would be nice for these models to become cheaper. I know people who have used them in Ubiquity gear successfully just ensure you have SFP+ ports. In regards to HeyBroadband compatibility I’m not aware of anyone who has tested the WAS on that ISP I would ask the question in the 8311 Discord and myself and other members can help further 👍

I get lower ping on sky full fibre, my latency shows as 6.43 ms. My friend who has BT Full Fibre who also lives about a 10 minutes drive from me gets 2-3 ms latency. Virgin Media’s routing is horrible indeed. I wonder if that’ll ever get fixed.

Thanks for your feedback . The first part of the video was giving some background and explaining about the different types of technology Virgin Media use and why XGSPON is different. The majority of the first section of the video is a screen recording video where I show you extracts from my blog with visuals to go with my narration. Unfortunately I was not able to capture video of the pre install which is shown via images in my blog post (better than nothing) You are free to skip ahead on a video if certain parts are not to your taste.

Nice setup. In my apartment I have a UPS for backup, but it doesn't help since we use HFC fiber to Coax configuration at the POP for the building that does not have a power backup courtesy of the cable company. So, when power goes down in the building, I lose my internet because the HFC has lost power. When power returned the HFC reconnected to the Rogers CO. But I still must power cycle by router and my Xfinity boxes since they come back faster than the HFC (It takes about three minutes to complete the connection as far as I can tell) Rogers has no interest in adding a UPS to the HCF configuration since we are a low income building and our outages are typically a couple of times a year for less than 5 minutes on average so Rogers representative has explained ot me.

Here in Toronto, I am in a low-income building and use the local cable providers discount plan. They recently upgraded our premises connection to a HFC Hybrid Fiber coax POP fiber connection to the building (FTTB?) that then runs RG56 CATV to the units. It's an easy way to get rid of the aging copper plant i the neighborhoods without having to spend any money re-cabling the actual building units. Rogers have split the building into two HFC Nodes leading back to the single fiber connection that has an HFC control module of some sort. Unfortunately, the installers (third party contractors that spoke extraordinarily little English) were not interested in talking about the setup. They were told where to put the boxes and how to power them. and where to connect the fiber. I got most of the information by looking at the boxes they were throwing in the garbage. and taking pictures when they left the boxes open on the side of the building during their breaks and lunches. the Fiber itself was installed by another third-party contractor (They were even less willing to talk to me) and told me to call Rogers) They knew nothing about the architecture or configuration. One for each face of the building (East side and west side) It's been remarkably stable with only one major outage due to a regional power failure lasting several hours. The downside to the HFC configuration is that it relies on building power for its operation and Rogers is not interested in installing a UPS to keep both nodes operational since power failures typically last only a few minutes. The HFC nodes will re-establish their connection when they get powered up. Then we must manually cycle our routers to re-establish the connection to the HFC Nodes. Now on top of this we also use Xfinity for our cable TV. which establishes a wireless connection to the router in our unit with a private hidden VPN. The VPN Channel is fully encrypted as well so getting the details even with packet sniffing would not be possible without the decryption key and it is a session-based key from what I have been told. Thus, it changes every time the router is power cycled, and a new connection is established. So, even with a direct fiber connection I could not work directly from my own router unfortunately. I would still need the Rogers router for the Xfinity session.

Hi I have city fibre network installed to my address and having trouble choosing between A&A, IDNet, Yayzi, or Zen. These are supposedly the top 4 ISP’s from my research. The broadband will be used for working from home and mobile gaming. I am based in Coventry, West Midlands. Which of the ISP’s would you recommend and is a static IP required so I don’t have CGNAT? All help is appreciated.
@nsmmedia

Hi Elusive12, I’ve used Andrew’s and Arnold and IDNet before and both are very good and provide static IPv4 and IPv6 as standard and let you use own router etc. Zen are also meant to be good from what I hear all those three I know offer good customer support . Yayzi I’ve heard mixed things about and not had any experience of yet but I believe they are cheaper.

For MikroTik from the console, you use; /interface ethernet set sfp1 auto-negotiation=no /interface ethernet set sfp1 disable-running-check=yes This turns off management of the SFP port to manage the speed it can connect at, and will turn on the optics on the SFP. Make sure you have a dust cover in place on the optics so not to blind yourself. 'sfp1' is the sfp interface in RouterOS.

Thanks for taking the time to cover it in such detail, it's a shame Virgin don't really seem to care. I have a full unifi network with AP's, cameras, dream machine etc... and I'm not going to just use their awful wifi hub because they can't get modem mode working.

Youll be taking away the smart monitoring feature that the Hub5x uses to test for any area issues ect. Samknows monitoring wont relay back to the servers and cause issues resulting in technicians being booked to your address for BB issues ect.

Unfortunately that monitoring/ testing was causing issues especially for people with GiG2 VM have had to disable it on a lot of lines for now see www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2024/08/virgin-media-uk-working-to-fix-ping-spikes-on-2gbps-broadband-lines.html I’m not aware of any technicians coming out as a result of using the WAS-110 nor VM contact anyone due to lack of monitoring. Everyone I know who has changed to using a WAS-110 has had a more stable and better performing broadband connection.
