I have a big old wheel made for cotton I think because the spindle is just under six inches long. I never used the Minors Head, I went direct drive (52:1). I have been spinning for 40 years and also started out on the Ashford Traditional. Got the Walking Wheel for a song so I used it for the Woolen spun singles and plied on the Traddy. My Cops (copse, copps) are cone shaped. To keep the spun yarn from squeezing off the tip while spinning, I wrap a rubber band around the spindle about an inch from the tip. Never had any need for quills, I just remove the rubber band, put my thumb on the end of the spindle and pull off the Cops. You quickly learn to precisely control the twist in the yarn and keep it consistent which means great 2-ply yarn in the end. I have met so many people that told me that they couldn't use the walking wheel and it has never taken more than twenty minutes for me to get them happily spinning. It must be something bred into me because the first time I saw a Walking Wheel, I knew I could do it. Great video!

I have never used my antique pirn winder to spin (I use it to wind off of my other antique wheels) but why not? Love it! I noticed that it may have a wooden wheel axel-word of caution: hit it with petroleum jelly or similar every. time. you. use. it. So much more fragile than the forged metal variety.

On the Louet loom the tie on Rod is connected by a small 1.5” piece of texsolv that is screwed to the beam.

It is so good to hear that this is a good carder. I too do not have a lot of money for big equipment and have been checking out the carder that my local library has. As you can imagine, it is not in good shape and the wait list for it is always months long so this is a very attractive carder to me.

Can I ask you do you cut the knots off after the scarf has been washed and the yarn has felted ?

With this particular scarf I leave them. The navy yarn in rayon and doesn’t felt so I can’t cut them. Only the orange yarn (merino wool) felts. If it was just wool you could cut them

Thanks for another video Mr. Weft Wright! I don't currently have space for looms but wondered if anyone else might like this: I am very frugal and the horror 😱 of using my project yarn to tie on with only to cut so much of it when removing from the loom was the origin for this idea. I used to keep my loom set up with cheap yarn on both front and back beams. Something like rug warp worked well. To these I would use one of your handy knots to fasten on my project yarn. The knots must be able to pass through the dents for a few rows of weft in order to maximize the savings but it always worked out for me.

Good morning Trent...thank you for this nicely done video. I use an AVL warping wheel for my sectional warping. My question to you is this...on my old AVL loom, I could wind the warp on without messing with the brake as it only prevented the warp from being "unwound"...that is while advancing the warp during weaving. The brake did NOT prevent the sectional beam from going backwards as when winding on. So, on my David 3 the brake cable prevents the sectional beam from moving in either direction without the brake being disengaged. I have been removing the cable from the spring to wind on....Is this what you do? Thanks so much...cheryl
@TheWeftWright
@TheWeftWright Ай бұрын
You can loosen the brake tension enough to wind the Warp on, but this wears out the wooden brake drum and wastes time in finding the right tension again. I just disconnect the cable as you mentioned. I think this is what Louet intended and it works well for sectional warping because we tend to warp in with higher tension than traditional warping.

Does it allow winding in both directions? I have found with winding cakes that its best to do it once clockwise then once anticlockwise so the yarn doesn't have any extra twist added, so would this be possible with this cone winder? Cakes have served me well for my machine but it would be neat to upgrade
@TheWeftWright
@TheWeftWright Ай бұрын
It is based on the systems used by industrial mills and cannot run in the opposite direction. I’ve never had an issue, but I suppose if you had a loosely piled yarn and the twist was going in the same direction it could be a problem.

I enjoy cleaning fleece. I have tried suint bath and normal washing with detergent. I often did multiple full fleece at a time, so the suint bath became my favourite. it was a few years ago though and most of the cleaned and carded wool is still waiting for me to spin it (I got sick). I Love single treadle wheels and Ive found the Ashford traveller is great if you can get an old one with single treadle, because you can alternate and use either leg to power it. It is great for my bad hips. Oh, I also keep a piece of unwashed wool for my records too ;-). Thanks for the video.

;-) It is stinky, but amusing. It is hard to choose a good spot to set up bins if you only have a small yard. Luckily my sunny spot was away from the neighbours. It certainly doesnt clean the same as detergent and warm water, but my fleeces all came out very clean. not quite as white as soap and warm water as there was still some lanolin left in the wool. However It was less back breaking seeing as I do all my processing outside on the lawn, and it also saved me connecting a garden hose from the hot water tap in the laundry to get the water all the way out to the back yard. I wouldnt do it for small batches, and it doesnt work in winter so it would never be my only method. But it is definitely an adventure and makes a good story to tell 😆

Very much enjoyed your careful demonstration of the little great wheel, so happily named, and the way you manage the fiber on it. Plus the pirn! One less step to the loom. I spin cotton on a tiny lap spindle and yes, it’s more relaxed and meditative than is using the flyer wheel. May it be cool and lovely over there in Western NC…waving from the Kentucky Bluegrass. Now off to check the website. Many thanks!

May I ask, you said that you measured the yarn on the bobbins but you had yarn remaining on the bobbins. Does that mean you measured more yarn than you needed on the spools? Or you had enough on each spool for the full width. Eg. 2m warp with 10 inch width so you had 2x10 on each spool? Sorry for beginner question
@TheWeftWright

Yes…. You measure the number of sections time’s the warp length on each bobbin, then I add two yards just in case. Thanks for your question
