This is NOT Travis picking
@putsiecat1620 күн бұрын
If you listened to the begining of the video, I say explicitily "This is Travis Picking ala Bill Nash" - meaning, this is the way I learned and teach it. There are several different ways to do it (even Merle Travis did it with 2 fingers instead of 3 much of the time). You have a right to yrou opinion, as do I... so we're both right. ;)

Funny thing... I told everyone in this video, and other videos, that if they could play a song that uses the crickets, or the cicadas, for their percussion section, I would give them a $10 bill! I was the only one close, but several tried!

Ok, I will try to make you a personal pattern chart that uses numbers instead of letters... the biggest reason I used letters here is this example is in standard tuning, and the "E" is the low E, and "e" is the high E. I will attempt to make a personal chart for you!

In your steps, I think beginning with step three you’re not saying what strange you’re picking. Please explained in each step the strings you are picking by their number for instance pluck six and five I think you said something like that, but you stopped when it came to the other steps And the other steps it would be helpful to say 6321. 6 been the low E string and one being the high E string. It’s better than most of the instructors called the strengths by their letter and it takes more thinking to try to remember that, but it’s easier to call the strings by number

Hi Bill, I hope this helps... if you could put your email address in the replay to this post, I can send you the full 5 step program sheet, and it should be much more clear. Step 3: thumb is always 6 4 alternating, and 1st finger on the and of 2 (1 2 & 3 4) on the 2nd (b) string Step 4: thumb is always 6 4 alternating, and 1st finger on the and of 2, middle finger on the and of 3 (1 2 & 3 & 4) on the high e string Step 5: thumb is always 6 4 alternating, and 1st finger on the and of 2 (b string), middle finger on the and of 3 on the 1st (e) string, and finally the 1st finger on the and of 4 (b string) (1 2 & 3 & 4 &)

And one thing I might add is what Justin Guitar says about “practice makes perfect” is “so practice perfectly”. In other words, start playing slow, pay your dues as Bill says, and hit the correct strings, so as to not commit hitting the wrong strings to memory. Speed will come later. Love this video, Bill.

I’m sorry but, this isn’t that good of a “program.” Start with step 4. Steps 1-3 are a complete waste of your time. P.S. You owe some dues.
@putsiecat162 ай бұрын
I'm glad you were already near step 4 in your picking ability when you saw this video... most people are not that lucky (which is why the first 2 steps are critical). You are welcome to your opinion, although I am not aware of what "dues" I owe, and to whom. Keep on picking!
@monkeysweeperguitar2 ай бұрын
@@putsiecat16s,” comment was tongue-in-cheek about how you appear to need more practice 😉. You are good, but your right hand/fingers could use some metronome time. Not bad though. I started 24 years ago with a simple chart. It was the C chord and basically the tab for what you would call, step 4. The hand more naturally does this pattern. While I absolutely agree that people need to get the thumb to automatically alternate between 6&4; if someone practices that pattern is A: Going to be less bored B: Is going to get the repetitive alternating bass movement anyway. Step 4, played incrementally faster is easy enough for anyone who already plays any guitar. I didn’t have KZbin, or any other video application, like people starting out do now. It’s a great thing, truly is. But there can be a lots of confusing information too. Doesn’t make it wrong, still…

@@monkeysweeperguitar - thanks for clarifying... we are on the same page for sure! It's funny, but from the early days I was writing songs and making albums (started around 1994), my engineer accused me a few times of having "swallowed a metronome" - that was 30 years ago! I also have had multiple sclerosis (for 36+ years), which may have a little bit to do with my non-machine-like playing these days (or it could just be old age ;) ) I hope that it's clear that I love to teach guitar technique! <3
