Please tell me how life is there .. I live in the US, Mississippi, soon to be Florida, and my heritage hails from Ireland as my last name is Ronan. I'm enamoured with life there .. a local pub would be heaven for me .. to be able to speak to the locals, play some darts and foosball, have some local beers on draught and let them make fun of my flat accent.

Sounds like you'd like it there Rob. The town has a population of just over 2,000 with 4 very cosy pubs/hotels where you would meet the locals and enjoy some very good draught beer. The food served in these places is also top-notch and very good value. In the "Summer" the weather varies a lot so there's no guarantee what the weather will be like on any given day. Sunshine in the morning can lead to heavy rain in the afternoon. On the plus side, it won't be anywhere near as humid as Mississippi or Florida! And yes, they might make fun of your accent (but you'd be made very welcome). For more photos, see: facebook.com/Biggar.Scotland/

art is art - whether it is good or bad, it is all subjective. Remember there was a time that Van Gough was considered insane and a bad artist who could not sell a painting for 5 francs - now you could not touch one of his paintings for 50 millions francs. Or Michelangelo as obscene, but now he is considered one of the greats that others study.

Not anymore. People have said the Indian girl is racist. So they have removed her from the box. These people in my opinion need to get a life.

That's too bad. So many things going away because some people are "offended." There was a presenter on British television reprimanded because 1 (yes ONE) person complained about what was said. :-(

What a surprise and shock to stumble across this. A big thanks to Mr Mcmurdo and the person who had posted onto You Tube as all I had left of that day was the memories and the youth Ha! Ha!.

Point of order. They are not Morris dancers. Morris died out in Scotland 400 years ago.This rabble are sword dancers. Sword dance is rare - but still there.

Thank you! The music is from a "royalty-free" collection I have. Cannot remember the name off-hand but if you're really interested I could dig it out. It's not something you'd find on iTunes though.

@CallumODonnell I remember your Dad well! The last time I saw him was at the Gala Day when my nephew (George Moffat) was Cornet.

How great to see the Pipe Band in the 'old days'. And yes, John Howie only had the one arm. He was a very competent snare drummer too. He took off his false arm and fitted on a spring device which he had made and which held the drumstick. He also arranged the tune 'Highland Laddie' to be played with one hand only on the pipe chanter.!!! Quite a resourceful chappie. I think that my Dad - Tommy O'Donnell - will also be in that film but I can't quite make him out, .
@CallumODonnell13 жыл бұрын
yep - that sounds about right! He also ran all the kids' Christmas parties and when it was time for 'postman's knock' he would put the boy and the girl in the cupboard ( where they were supposed to kiss) but would leave the door open so he could make sure there was no hanky panky.

@CallumODonnell Thanks Callum. Glad you enjoyed it. The first time I came across Baldy Bryden was my first day in Biggar; I went into the shop to buy something and he wouldn't hand it over until I said "please." :-) George M.

I use to hold these in my hand when I was younger. They are pretty damn strong. They put up quite a fight on your fingers, prying them apart with there powerful legs to get away. I read an article about them and it spoke the truth: They can't fly for shit. They bumble around, flying close to the ground where people could easily catch them, and they fly and hit walls regularly, fall to the floor, and begin flying clumsily again. You could actually hear them hit the wall because they're so big.

You can do this yourself at home; simply by cutting out the "Land o' Lakes" logo and putting your knuckles behind the hole. I did this like, 20 years ago when I was a kid.
