Is it better than a 5980?
@HighTime1
@HighTime1 Жыл бұрын
Hi, they are very similar, depending on your needs. Same movement base, the 5980 is Chronograph Flyback only while the 5990 adds a Travel Time function that allows tracking a 2nd time on your watch (1 hour hand for Local time and another one for your Home time). Very convenient to use as a traveler. The 5990 is only 0.3mm thicker. A little difference on the chronoraph though: the 5980 has an additional 12h chronograph hour hand hence more useful if tracking >60min. events.

@@HighTime1 Hi, thank you for thr reply. I Appreciate you taking the time to offer a more in-depth description of this watch. Does the 5980 have a higher retail value than the 5990?

@@AyandaKula My pleasure, I'm glad it helps. On Patek's website, it seems the 5990 is more expensive (+8/9%) than the 5980.

2:33 those gear teeth can’t be meshing as they don’t match.
@HighTime1
@HighTime1 2 жыл бұрын
It is indeed suprising but on another close-up I have, they do mesh. The "spring" system allows both pinion and wheel to remain in contact permanently. I'll post a more detailed article in the future with the pictures.

@@HighTime1 why wouldn’t they be matching pitch? Doesn’t make gear sense.

@@MagnetOnlyMotors Well, I won't go into too much details (and I'm not a watchmaker) but here is what I can tell. There are 4 1/10th pinion teeth between 2 clutch wheel teeth (the math should have fixed that, considering the time measurement requirements). The clutch wheel has to mesh also with the antibacklash wheel (1 rev/min, both with similar teeth size). The small 1/10 pinion (1 rev/12 sec) has to display 1/10, hence, to avoid aproximations when starting/stoping the chronograph, the teeth must be smaller. The pinion isn't bigger because of the lack of room, the 1/10th high speed, hence high inertia implied. Bigger teeth on the 1/10th pinion wouldn't be as precise (or would have led to accelerate strongly the hand's speed for a different 1/10th scale choice) or at the cost of energy consumption.

@@HighTime1 sorry, I understand about gears and mixing different pitches not to mention different teeth sizes simply don’t work. I don’t get why this is done here.

Whenever I watch these videos, I see the huge gap between the person who is the fruit of generation and generations of excellence and myself, from the grim forests of Finland. I do not complain but I can see how the world one is born in molds your destiny. How nice would it be to be the best in the world in anything!

Watching again. I have recently experimented with miniature writing. Like letters about 1mm tall done under 10X magnification (jewellers loupe). STRANGE ENOUGH, I could do it no problem FIRST TRY. Engraving into plastic and copper and also using a sharp pencil on paper. Honestly thought it took years or training. But considering how my grandfather could draw, it might be genetics. Superfine motor skills.
