Years ago, I read a description of the Weehawken dualling grounds, and why it was a favorite spot for dualling. It was hidden from above by an overhang, heavy undergrowth shielded it from the side, and it couldn't be seen from the water. The ground itself resembled a shelf, about 6 feet wide and 60 feet long which served to focus the eye on the opponent. It was later destroyed by development, although a marker stands at the site.

During the night of 31 August, Nazi SS troops dressed themselves in Polish uniforms and staged an attack on the Gleiwitz radio tower in Upper Silesia. This ‘false flag’ operation was part of a wider series of staged attacks on Germans and German property called Operation Himmler that was designed to make it appear as if Poland was exercising aggression against Germany. Just hours after the Gleiwitz incident, at 4.45am on 1 September, the first of approximately 1.5 million German troops launched their attack on Poland. This led to the encirclement of Polish forces thanks to the launch of coordinated attacks from the north, south and west. The attack from the south came across the border with Slovakia, which had declared its independence in March under pressure from Hitler. Known as the Battle of the Border, Germany's three-pronged ground attack was supported by air raids that targeted key Polish cities. It took just 5 days for German troops on the ground to force the Polish army to retreat to their secondary defensive lines. The German government had already ensured that the Soviet Union would not respond aggressively to the invasion by signing the Nazi-Soviet Pact a week earlier. In accordance with the ‘secret’ protocol’ of this agreement, the USSR launched its own invasion of Poland from the east on 17 September, and this crushed Polish hopes of victory. The Polish government refused to surrender to Germany and instead evacuated the country to form a government-in-exile in Allied countries

I am a full time live abroad, I have logged 15,000 nm. While in the Long Island sound I sailed to Fairhaven and visited Slcoms Cove where he rebuilt his boat. I collected some dirt and carry it with me. I am currently in Trinidad but will be heading to the Mediterranean next year. I have sailed a lot of the waters he talks about in the book.

Nice video. Amazing that it still has the record but unsurprising at the same time. Will be intersting to see if it does ever get beaten if sea travel becomes more of a thing if a way is invented to make it better for the enviroment than air travel

What a fascinating era. The revolution, the constitution, the presidency, all the relationships between the founding fathers and how their decisions and philosophies still ripple into today's world. I will spend my life combing the details of this particular place and period of time. Thank you for your work.

Billie Jean Kings campaign was focused on getting men and women equal pay in tennis, something that continues to be (to my understanding) nearly the only sport that pays them equally. And it makes total sense, as in the NBA for example, there is SUCH a difference in spectatorship for WNBA that it just makes sense that sadly women get paid less. But in tennis, for the most part and 💯 true in our current day and age, spectatorship and support of the sport is very equal regardless of gender. Now to my point lol, even Serena Williams has stated it, and the Margaret Court situation proves it perfectly, male and female tennis are very different. Because of BASIC HUMAN ANATOMY, men are faster and stronger than women, physically and it’s just that simple. Now Bobby Riggs was a sexist horrible guy that said women belong in the kitchen, not in the court, so on and so forth. But that’s besides the point, with the recognition that women can be incredible tennis players and men can as well, they simply cannot compete because their anatomy is different and that is why they do not. I’ve been playing tennis my entire life and Bobby Riggs 💯 threw the match I mean really. I had always heavily idolized Billy Jean because of this legendary match without having actually watched it all and after doing so it is evident Bobby Riggs threw it. He won money because he bet a lot on her but in the end it was good on both sides because her case and campaign got severely improved after she won so heavily, but Bobby Riggs for sure would have won if he was actually trying to. Claiming men and women could be equal in a PHYSICAL aspect is just crazy, they should be equal in the way they get paid for putting in the same amount of effort playing the same sport for sure but it just cannot be equal. And as a young girl, that’s not sexist that’s just straight up common sense.

I remember as a 8 year old, out for a walk near the Tor, seeing lots of long haired people in very colourful clothes….I did think it a bit strange to see so many, no idea a festival was going to happen…..so although not at the festival, by accident I was among the many hippies who were there…….my parents must have been shocked, being from a very different generation…..

The British left his body hanging for three days. They refused him a Bible or a chaplain. They tore up the letter he wrote to his family right in front of him. They only let him write the letter so they could tear it up. In war spies are hung but the cruelty of how he was treated was not necessary. The British prison ships in the New York harbor were also shockingly cruel. War is war but being intentionally cruel is another matter. The Nathen Hale story is one of extreme cruelty.
