If you are going to get into sync licensing, You need to find a way to embrace them. It will help a lot. However, you can’t do them all. Do what you can. They are hard to conquer and i get it.

I've definitely experienced success writing to briefs, but I've had A LOT more placements not writing for a specific brief. Instead, writing a song that could serve a variety of sync needs, handing it off to a sync rep / library / publisher, then letting the need arise for that song in time (sometimes several years later). Both ways can work though!

Basically, Taxi was legit back when they were pitching music to A&R at record companies. But when that dried up, they moved into the sync world in which their methods are dubious at best. I submitted a few songs that fit their briefs as close as humanly possible, and, predictably was rejected citing bogus reasons (like for example, the chorus not coming in soon enough, which is total BS. One of the examples in their brief was a longer intro / verse than mine, plus the music supervisor will just cut the song anywhere they want. I did a few submissions, (were rejected) all with equally frivolous reasons. (and, I should mention, I had several sync deals prior, from just networking, or via a label I was on).

The more content ID becomes a thing, the more people will remember to clear their tracks. Surely content ID was never going to be a forever money source. If you've got loads of views on a channel, makes sense to clear tracks. It's actually a business model that incentivises people to not use it 😂😂😂

I suspected KZbin's contentID system was broken years ago. I would love a system that 'just' tells you where your music has gone. I have been somewhat successful giving away music under Commons licenses (with restrictions) to largely new content creators who probably haven't been able to monetize their channel yet. There are other one off placements in independant film, student presentations, private parties etc... Such search tech with a broad sweep does not exist if not impossible as far as I know

Hi, I have sent 5 tracks to Motion Array 26th Oct 2024, and they are still waiting for being accepted - is that some error?
Many of these sites, including Pond5, have poorly mixed, poorly produced music which makes me wary of having my music associated with them.

Just listening to Tony Anderson - immanuel. I write more film/musical music rather than songs. For 2025 just ordered a ROland EX6 rather than keep using the laptop to write as it takes so long to load sounds. Is that something you face ?

I sell on Motion Array and I was very disappointed to read their email today and see my earnings will take a big hit from Jan 01st onwards. Their massively increased download requirements per month (a HUGE jump up) for each commission tier will significantly harm my earnings. That will take me from a reliable and steady 40% commission every month to around 20-25% commission each month. All done to "Bring commissions in line with the general market" apparently, which is a much much nicer way of saying "We're taking way more off you and keeping it for ourselves". Sad.

I had my tracks removed in 2022 after they dropped the composer rate from 50% to 35%. Publishers are either dropping rates or demanding writers share for not writing squat. I refused to let them do that to me just on principle. I knew it wouldn't stop there. That's why they keep doing it. They know composers will complain but in the end are willing to meet the race to the bottom half way. No thanks.

Is it possible to quote a percentage of library music that is for songs versus instumentals? I would imagine that the amount of instrumental work carried by music libraries is of a higher percentage.
@MakeMusicIncome14 күн бұрын
They like to sign songs with vocals, but remember when Music supervisors are searching for what they need for the scene, they can just search for instrumentals only. So often you are hearing the instrumental of the song does have a vocal. And if it does have a vocal that might come in handy for some part of the scene.

i really enjoy your podcast. I have been really frustrated with these companies. I made over 900.00 dollars last quarter with audiosparx and this quarter will be lucky to crack 300.00. Last year at this time for content id i made over 4000.00 mostly with tunecore collecting and this year i won't even make 100.00 lol. I also have a lot of songs on identify and they are not collecting for most of the streams. I have some public domain songs in some movies on youtube and there are millions of views but find a company that will collect the money. Identify said they would collect them and they haven't done a thing.
@MakeMusicIncome18 күн бұрын
Thanks for this comment. That's fantastic about AudioSparx. It's all perspective. But I made the mistake of treating AudioSparx like AudioJungle. All I get there is RadioSparx streaming pennies. Are you still getting song uses there? How many songs at Sparx, Identifyy.
@DavidWalkerVan18 күн бұрын
in all honesty i haven't got a placement in a couple years the money is all radiosparx streams. I used to get quite a few song usages but not for a while. I have probably 300 plus songs on audiosparx and over 100 on identify but like you i am thinking about moving my identify songs to somewhere else. I am on pond 5 also but it it wasn't for the data money i wouldn't have made much at all.

I actually reached out to Pond5 support and asked what the dataset earnings rate was before, here’s what they said: “Currently the royalty percentage for dataset earnings would depend on the media and your royalty rate. Nonexclusive would be 40%, and exclusive would be 60%.” So yeah it’s going from either of those down to 20%.
