Mark, great vid, thanks for uploading! Now that 3 years have passed and you've presumably sailed your nicely equipped rig, we would love to hear an update! How does she sail with the jib? My next comment is a bane to all sailors, and that is I notice that you have lines all over the place. Line management is its own special art, and as a kayak fisherman and bike rider, I would love to see Hobie come out with a spiffy through-hull jib line guidance system -- shoot, put more of them in the hull LOL! I am curious, I was taught to deploy the jib first, and then the mainsail, due to the big power hit vs. control. Inversely, when much less power is needed, then the main gets stowed, and the jib gets trimmed or stowed. Would this sequence be at odds with the need for tension in the jib forestay and slack on the mainsail leading edge? Specifically, it appears that if both sails are deployed and an emergency situation demands rapid and major depowering of the mainsail, then that jib forestay will prevent the furling of the main. Can you speak to that? THANKS IN ADVANCE

Great video! Is that a furled jib or spinnaker on the front? I bought the Hobie spinnaker for my Adventure Island and converted it into a furling system, with a torque rope. Hobie's spinnaker kit comes with a sock/snuffer system that attaches to the aka bars, but that seemed overly complex, and it gets in the way when fishing. I haven't seen any other furling spinnakers on Hobie Islands, and very few jibs either.
@coenlife6 жыл бұрын
It's an oversized jib. In other videos, I am actually using it. It's a nice contraption but does not have the power of a spinnaker in downwind sailing. In lighter winds, it is very nice. The size is totally adjustable like the main and easily furls and unfurls. There are videos describing the system as well. Feel free to check them out. The Hobie forum has a bunch of info as well.

Great video Mark. Where can I buy one of those masthead rotating fitting
@larrywillbang6 жыл бұрын
Mark. That's looks like it would work on a carbon fiber mast I have that the sail roll around to furl. I have wondered how to attach a jib. Where can I get one of these
@coenlife6 жыл бұрын
Hi Larry! I worked with a local company to make it. I have had three made so far at a cost of about $400. Spendy, but professional and works great. If interested please send me a private message and I will work with you to get one made to your specs. Feel free to check the Hobie forum for additional information as well.

great video could you make a video of you using the blue splash/spray guard. that would be great. Thanks for all your videos.
@coenlife7 жыл бұрын
Interesting timing. I have had the splash guards on the boat for about a year and today removed them before going out. I have used them only one time as they don't really provide much benefit for the type of boating I do. When I am with my wife, we often have the dog. He hates water splashing on or near him, so we don't take him out in those kinds of conditions. When I am by myself or with a friend and I am in conditions which generate splash, I generally am sitting on the windward haka (bench), not on the boat seat, so the splash is not an issue. The one time I used them, they did prevent quite a bit of splash from hitting us, but for now my focus is on simplification, Less ropes, less messing the better. The jib on the other hand is a winner in the right winds. Set it up every time and unfurl it when the winds allow it. I am redoing the jib control lines as soon as the parts arrive. When I have some time I will make another video of a simplified jib system. I love the boat. Yesterday I went out with a friend. Today was my honey and our dog.

Loved the video and explanations. Can you provide more detail on the attachments to the mast head (jib halyard and side stays)?
@coenlife8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for you comments and interest. I posted more detailed information on the Hobie Forum where my teachers and encouragement come from. www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=21875 and www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=59270&start=30 provide more detailed explanation. If you have more specific questions you can either ask here, or send me a PM with you email address so I can answer in more depth. The mast topper is home designed but not homemade. I tried the homemade two times and gave up. So, I spent little more money than homemade units, but considering safety, flexibility and the no mess factor, I have no regrets. Side stays may not be needed, but make me feel better. My sail area with the jib in gusts makes more work and increases risk of tipping. In low wind conditions it is a 'breeze' ;).

4 people on a TI? how did it perform given the recommended weight limit of 600 lbs?
@coenlife8 жыл бұрын
On a calm day it is not a problem at all. Boat speed may slow down a spec, but not much, and there were no stability issues. I didn't weigh everyone or everything when we got on, but I am guessing the people and dog came to just under 600lb. Adding the hakas (benches at 10 lb a piece) might have put us just a bit over 600 but not much. I have never sailed in strong winds with more than three. From a boat stability point of view, I am guessing adding even another 400lb would not be a problem on a calm day with no surprises. In stronger winds you would probably have more front diving issues. For me the big issue is that more people = more responsibility and more complexity, especially in the case of a 'surprise'. There may be places where state or laws would be concerned about weight limits. I am not in the US. Where I am, with my usage, it is a non-issue. Safety is very import and doesn't take second place to having fun.
@teop78878 жыл бұрын
Mark Bowman cool, thanks! either you're all very skinny or in top shape! hahahaha Here in the US they are more strict, so I can only sail in tandem, or with a third passenger. enjoy your Hobie!
@coenlife8 жыл бұрын
The culture here doesn't encourage weight gain nearly as much as US culture does. Plus one in the group was an even smaller Japanese gal. Here, if I put a motor on my boat, I would have to be licensed and more careful about weight.

What are you using for side stays? Looks like spear gun rubbers? Where are they attached?
@coenlife8 жыл бұрын
The are attached to the mast head on arms sticking out for that purpose. I am using 750 lb test weight para-cord to the handle on each ama. I have a fairly heavy duty bungee cord bent in half and attached to the para-cord to add spring to the para-cord. There is a piece of para-cord to the side of the bungee that gets tight when the elastic is close to maximum stretch Did I understand your question correctly?

Nice sail, I went Friday and the wind was at 25. Awesome! One question I have seen many people using the hard Aka boards does it put more stress on Ama and hull? Also down wind how is the jib? Thank you have a good day sir.
@coenlife8 жыл бұрын
Extra stress: I have had two people sitting on one side. The boat is lower in the water, but I am guessing there is no undue stress on the akas. Down wind you can set it up opposite the main wings to give you that much more sail area. but a spinnaker would be of course more efficient. Sailing into the wind there is maybe minimal or no advantage, though technically there should be. That is the general experience of Island users with jibs. But I have yet to do a measured test. The biggest advantage is for lighter wind days, having more sail area. Most say they add about 1 - 1.5 mph. Enjoy! And... good day to you, Sir. Check the Hobie forums. There is LOTS of info from people much smarter and more experienced than me.

Mark, I write from Spain, your videos are very interesting and they liked me. I think the key to all the possibilities is the piece that goes on the top of the mast. Could you tell me where I can buy it? Thank you.
@coenlife8 жыл бұрын
You are right. The mast topper is pretty important. Mine is custom made by a local stainless steel company here in Japan. They would charge US$400 to make another. There are home made units too. The Hobie forum and KZbin have ideas. If you want I can send you the CAD drawing if you like. You could likely find a cheaper source.

Japan do not change and while doing this enhance your economy that has a limited natural resource base. The best natural resource is Japan's innovation and clear and undetermined motivation to be better. Same as in Taiwan and they make theirs better not KISS. In addition they have real world pressure from a dominate political rival who is also is twisting the throttle on Japan. The give up and do nothing (attitude)is for American's because we love failure... German saying for loving to see people fail is Schdenfreude. Keep being the same isolated enriched Japan as always.. Smart!
