I'm proud to be a social worker. In some parts of the world, some people see it as a waste of time and resources to read social work. Listening to this overview has given me more reasons to further my social work profession. Thank you ma'am.

Finding this video tonight feels like a miracle. I can't believe this was recorded years ago; it is so relevant right now. I am a female (although go by they acceptably in gender fluidity acceptance) US Army veteran (and army journalist, public affairs and communication specialist) who has endured trauma, endured trauma around others dealing with trauma, it is now after COVID and the first 2024 presidential debate between Biden and Trump. I have had to deal with the social systems while it seemed the whole world had gone pear-shaped. I even grew up with my roots in the areas each of the presidential candidates are from. Word for word this presentation addressed everything I had been highlighting, speaking of, airing out and/or trying to talk about yet encountered nothing more than others' furthering trauma, you're right to say as someone trying to make headway you end up being a person with an unpopular opinion, I was accused by the violent traumatized populous at times of having a paranoid mental illness yet let me emphasize: word for word this presentation was all I was saying! I'm floored. I knew I wasn't crazy, pointing out what I thought was obvious while doing my best to be trauma informed for my own self healing, having to go without a support system altogether. I don't know how I pulled through, other than stubbornly knowing something was missing and I couldn't be the only one who could see this. I'm SO grateful I typed "sanctuary trauma" along those lines into my search bar on sad whim, thinking I had a stepdaughter once, family and my pets to go home to in my kitchen, water my baby plants before it was like everyone lost their minds and the covid-ocalypse hit. Now I have terminology, research and webinars to look to when all I had were my own speculations before, being touted as illness... I said the system was sick. I feel emotionally intelligent, like I was more emotionally, intellectually and spiritually equipped and stable within myself than I thought by some hairs of just others' opinions and toxic, life-altering gossip, I feel more confident in advocating for myself and others, and this comes at a time when after years of noticing the problems, I finally recently encountered better communication through determination of not letting these complications perpetuate in my life nor the social work I was going to be working with any further of I tried to work with the systems at all. Giving another chance to anything was obviously requiring unnecessarily excessive amounts of critical thinking and refusal of false altruistic bullshit that endangered my life as I saw it affecting everyone in my environment (my home community where I was born... and beyond!)! 😮 I think this should clarify what has been going on in not just our social work systems of compassion and caretaking but in realms like our politicians who are revered as public servants, our first responders like police who we expect to be like, walking sanctuaries to serve and protect as rescuers, for all... As well as families, social groups who are supportive community, our neighbors our friend groupings of trust together socially, in society. I could more-than sense this erratic, chaotic breakdown, it was physically obvious and impossible to ignore, and a major challenge of survival. I thought... Have we lost our sanctuary? We are all traumatized more than ever? What is this? "Sanctuary trauma" ...thank you! It's not all in my head, I knew more than I was given credit for by most, and I am ever so deeply grateful to find this resource. ❤🙏 🌎 Here's to being able to make better decisions in help as our flawed chaotic human selves knowing ourselves and the problems better all the way around, to solve better, to perpetuate what's been needed all along ❤

I don't mean to disrespect any counselors out there, but I've really had trouble seeing the point of the counselor field when an LCSW can do all of the same tasks and more. Not to mention the representative bodies are better organized and there are programs in place that allow people pursuing a career in social work to get there master's in social work sooner through advanced standing. Dr. McGowan, could you possibly elaborate on why counseling exists given it is completely doable as a social worker?

Undectable doesn't mean untransmittable! You still can infect a person if you're undetectable especially if you didn't take your meds for a day or if you share needles
