Whats weird about my own background is that both of my parents identified as African American. My mother and maternal grandfather were both White passing creoles from Louisiana.My beautiful maternal grandmother had much darker skin with dead straight hair. She was of Haitian,African, French and Houma ancestry on both sides of her family. While my father had a light complexion whose ancestry was European, Caribbean and multi-generational African American. My Brother and I look like this gentleman. While my sister is White passing. When i was younger people could figure i was either biracial or a light skinned Black person. But now at nearly 70 years of age i have a receding hairline with close cropped hair.Nobody who is not Black can figure out my background. But most Black people know. Lol but they have to stare at me just a little bit longer to figure it out. It is incredible how even the color of my clothes can change my appearance in terms of my skin tone. Also when i grow my beard i tend to look more African American. The shape of my nose and lips are universal.I recently took out an old photo of my maternal grandfather. My jaw nearly hit the floor. I am a spitting image of him when he was a man of nearly 70.There was no way i looked like him when I was a much younger man. We both sport the same Keith Hernandez type of mustache. I never made a conscious effort to do that. It just happened.

Marshall Burtcher talks about how to heal from codependency in a non popular approach id say...he discerns between using self esteem and self worth. He teaches pple how to find their inteinsic self worth and sense of self. I just thought to mention that for me, i never knew what esteem meant. I still struggle with it. He explains why he doesnt use that word. Without a sense of self it s like we have holes and we seek external validation to fill them to find self and safety (usually from lack of being able to mimic caregiver coz of neglect). Intrinsic value and self identity (which is of course fragmented and complex), and connection to these is maybe what others call esteem. Anyway just found it interesting.
