Howdy, I'm Jonny (SaturnJaguar). I'm a member of Gaming Alexandria and Sonic & SEGA Retro. I've known about your work with emulating Namco C139 games like Driver's Eyes and Ridge Racer Full Scale for quite a while now, but I've recently stumbled upon your old WIP video with the tachometer and saw your comment about the 3 monitor version of Ridge Racer. Firstly, thank you very much for researching and tinkering with these games (especially Full Scale) as you're preserving the presentation and experience of playing these games that looked and sounded larger than life. I also would like to share two things with you (i'm providing titles and creators only) 1. About a month ago, I found this video of what appears to be a functional 3-monitor version of Ridge Racer that is located in a shopping mall all the way in Pathum Thani, Thailand. The video was shot this past November, but I don't know if the unit is still there. "Namco Ridge Racer three monitor version demo reels" by Sleepy Pony Labs 2. Here's a semi-recent video from a former Namco dev who debunked the claim that the System 22 was co-developed by Evans and Sutherland. "namco System22にEvans&Sutherlandの技術は使われてません! (System22 is NOT based on E&S technology !)" by negi . moe This video is in Japanese, but they did make a KZbin short summarizing the info in English.

Hi there, that's fascinating. I've seen photos of the machine in Thailand, but never a video. I wonder if it was actually shot recently. What's particularly interesting is settles something I wondered. I tried picking apart the original single-screen game as it had elements of comms code in it, but it didn't look like a proper linkup. You can see in the video this is 1994. So it proves the linkup is the LAST version of the game - made after Full Scale. It does mean it's undumped though. Thailand's a long way :-/. If someone just dumps the program ROMs from any of three boardsets, that's likely enough to preserve it. I'll watch the other video later. My brother's got the boards from the DS5000/DS6000 - the 3-screen driving sim Namco/Mitsubishi made using S21 and S22, so the system had parallel uses anyway.

Oh wow, I didn't notice the 1994 on the title screen before...after digging through some Japanese publications like Game Machine, Famitsu and Gamest; this particular model made its debut at the 1994 AOU Show. It seems like it was offered as a step-up from the deluxe version by having the spectacle of three screens like Full Scale. I'm linking the coverage I found from Famitsu and Gamest here: the Famitsu coverage is in the March 18th 1994 issue (pg. 8), and the Gamest coverage is in the May 1994 issue (pg. 182). drive . google(.com)/file/d/1NWdZKZl4U5JX5cOn9QTZjqfIzBhzUxsD/view?usp=sharing drive . google(.com)/file/d/11pM_eJpSWkZsC5vnh0WAmWTuIra4j1lE/view?usp=sharing Here's to hoping that one of these days a unit much closer will pop up and get dumped 🤞 Also: that's awesome to hear that your brother has boards from the DS-5000 & DS-6000! Hi folks, since making this, I've realised you can get the UM330x and UM361X, which are pretty-much the exact same projector but with more brightness (30% more in the case of the UM361x), so if you can, go for those as you want as bright as you can for an arcade machine. At some point I'll do a side-by-side with the UM280x to show the improvement.

@@JaGomez0285 It takes most inputs via the VGA connector, where the composite sync out of the arcade boards can go to the H-sync wire. It's a supergun type setup I use (homemade), but you'd probably get away with resistors (470R on RGB) for a test (not as nice to the arcade boards as an opamp circuit).

@beaumotplage Жыл бұрын
Hi, the Sony is a three-CRT projector, like mine. The Sony is also of a much higher specification - it will operate up to 1080i, it has a vast array of inputs. My concern though is that it might have image processing, such as upscaling, that will remove the nice scanlines and the compatibility with lightguns. I looked at the manual and I think this is probably true, but I can't see if it is de-selectable to get a 'raw' image. If that doesn't matter, it's probably a very nice, huge 4:3 TV.

@@JaGomez0285 I think it's the brightness - those are both better than mine. I think the throw ratios and everything else is the same, but worth double-checking. Nice video! BTW Namco claimed you could link multiple Ridge Racer Full Scales for local multi-player (probably insanely expensive). We're you able to get that multi-player function working at all?
@beaumotplage2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I've been working on this driver quite a bit since - I must do an update. I have 2-player multiplayer working on Ridge Racer 2 and Rave Racer (see the jb_build on the arcade controls forum). But, I'm curious why/where Namco would've said Full Scale had linkup as there's no evidence of it in the code or the full scale instruction manual I've since seen diagrams from. I wonder if it was a salesman misunderstanding what the inter-PCB comms offered on this game.
@TheBigExclusive2 жыл бұрын
@@beaumotplage - Hello. Nice to hear from you. I could be wrong, but I will share what I saw. According to one user, apparently Namco released some alternate version Promotional Sales Flyers for Ridge Racer Full Scale to arcade owners. On a video game forum, one user shared a picture of the flyer he saved from the 1990s. In the picture, the words say something like "Have friends? Link up as many as you need!" Then Namco showed 4 Ridge Racer Full Scale machines all next each other. All of them racing in the same game. It was a huge setup. People were replying with amazement at how they never knew Full Scales could link up, and how expensive that type of setup would be. One Full Scale Machine was already hugely expensive. Unfortunately, the video game forum I saw it on shut down. I tried looking up the flyer on websites that save video game art, but I couldn't I find this alternate version artwork again. If you can't find any reference to multi-player in the code, then perhaps this "multiplayer" idea was a feature that Namco decided to drop? Maybe it required to some additional equipment to potentislly buy, but sales weren't good enough so they dropped the idea? Perhaps Namco realized that not many arcade owners would buy more than one Full Scale unit for their arcades, and scrapped the entire multiplayer idea? I know Sega released some huge multi-player arcade machines like their huge 8 player Virtua Racer arcade machine which was released in 1992 (one year before Ridge Racer Full Scale). With Each Virtua Racer cockpit having almost a full size indy car to sit in. And that Namco and Sega were competing heavily with eachother in the Arcade market back in the 80s and 90s. Anyways, keep up the good work with the coding and emulation. I'm glad Ridge Racer Full Scale was saved. I'm not sure any working Full Scale arcade units exist anymore. I haven't seen any in years. Have a nice day!
@beaumotplage2 жыл бұрын
@@TheBigExclusive That's very interesting, obviously if such a flyer turns up, I'd love to see it. I think the bits and pieces were there to do such a linkup - Fullscale uses the same serial bus to do 3 screens as the other games use to do linkups, so they could've chained up lots of PCBs to do multiple screens and multiple cars. Plus the multiplayer code was in-progress as Ridge Racer 2 was released shortly afterwards. So I guess maybe there was once prototype code sitting on a hard disk at Namco.... As for remaining machines, what I think was the last Full Scale was at Blackpool until recently. In the last year, I can say that the car, the PCBs and the signs have been saved, although the room it all sat in was scrapped unfortunately. So I must do an update on emulation progress as some point, as a lot has happened.

Hi, sorry if there's any confusion, but this is for TVs with SCART connectors on them - common in Europe. It was also just something I made for myself and some friends - I wasn't planning on selling them. I think there are solutions out there that support TVs without SCART - they tend to have S-video or Composite ICs on them to convert RGB to those signals. The Parsec supergun looks like it does that, although I don't know how available that is.

Did you need to use a converter board for the CPS3 to display on this? I thought about picking one of these up locally for all my entertainment needs (VHS, arcade boards, etc.). A lot of monitors need a scaler, especially PC CRTs since they _only_ do 480p and up. My goal is to play House of the Dead 1 on the original Model 2C board at home as I already have most of the parts, but it requires a medium res (24.8khz) monitor that actually outputs video from the game's gun I/O board itself.
@beaumotplage2 жыл бұрын
This TV is native 15kHz, so that matches arcade JAMMA boards, so the only converter I used was some op-amps to scale the voltages down to 75ohm SCART levels (a UK/EU supergun circuit - see my JammaToTV video for a diagram). Sadly 24kHz games are in a bit of a no-man's-land as far as TVs and monitors are concerned - this TV won't do it, I don't know any that will . CRT projectors often sync to 24kHz though (mine do), so I guess you may be able to play a giant game of HOTD against a wall (not much help - sorry)
