I was an NCAA umpire in the '80's and if a coach approached me and told me the pitcher was having problems gripping the ball due to the rain and it was reasonable to think the rain was an issue I would have paused the game until the rain let up considerably......I was also a fast pitch pitcher and know that a wet ball is difficult to control............umpire could have avoided all the nonsense with a simple common sense call...........

Well game should have been stopped if you cant grip the ball that is as Obvious as it gets. My dad was a softball umpire like this for decades and he said the same thing.

A softball is impossible to control when it's wet. It's difficult with a smaller baseball but at least there's a chance. Those smaller hands trying to control a softball in the rain is not going to happen.
