Just spend the money for a good aftermarket can. Slp makes an awesome lightweight that doesn’t blast a lot of sound. I ride where i can make noise so i run a Hps and it sounds awesome. Cuts weight, size, gives more power, and sounds great

Removing the packing will make it lose hp because of decreased velocity.
@MrJohnboe7 жыл бұрын
How exactly does removing packing DECREASE velocity? I can't wait to hear this. Even if it did magically 'decrease velocity', how exactly would that make you 'lose hp'? You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. But hey it's fun to criticize, which I'm ironically discovering right now. It may well make him lose power but it would be from screwing with the back-pressure. The sound/pressure wave from a combustion event enters the tuned expansion chamber (upstream of this muffler/can he's modifying), hits the end and bounces back in time to push the fresh air-fuel mixture back into the combustion chamber just before the rising piston closes off the exhaust port. He's not touching the expansion chamber but only the muffler, and even there he's not changing anything but removing some packing. Maybe that has an effect if as someone else said it doesn't allow the exhaust to remain an optimal amount of heat to work as designed i.e. 'on the pipe' (pipe is designed based on speed of sound in air at a certain pipe temperature outside of which it's not optimal for power production). But it certainly isn't because of 'decreased velocity'.
@williamherron93657 жыл бұрын
Bob Bob your muffler is just as picky as the expansion chamber. they have to have just enough back pressure all while flowing well. most aftermarket cans actually lose power of the factory silencers. as far as packing goes if you remove it the exhaust pressure blows through the baffles disrupting the velocity of the pressure pulse. dont believe me check out guys like dyno port they will say the exact same thing.
@MrJohnboe7 жыл бұрын
Okay, I just couldn't see removing an obstruction (packing) REDUCING the velocity (disrupting it, sure, or increasing it, yes, but reducing it?). Sorry for being a dick! No really, before posting my original response I almost deleted the part about you having no idea, but figured I'd let it fly. That's because I truly thought your statement made less sense than anything I had ever heard, and sometimes get sick of seeing crazy wild claims in youtube comments, with everyone professing to be experts and criticizing guys like the dude in the video who was sincerely trying to help others. I'm surprised you were able to take the high road and not lambast me back nor even mention my rudeness.......impressively classy. I could apparently learn from that. You could give lessons on how to effectively respond to an internet troll. You completely take the wind out of their sails by calmly answering them without even giving airtime to any dickish statements. Completely disarms them. Well played William Herron, the internet needs more people like you (and conversely less like me), normally I don't act like that but was grumpy.

@MegaXro8 жыл бұрын
the rotax original can is checked in the dyno for the optimal performance at every rpm. that muffler mod that he does just destroys the muffler and lowers the value of the snowmobile when you are going to sell it. i hope people aren't as dumb as he is and actually do this. its even more expensive to buy a new original muffler then buying a real can like ggb mountain can or bmp for sound and horsepower. they cost around 200 dollars. which is gonna be about the same value of all the work with the tools and all that for the original muffler. its not cheaper to do that shit mod.
@MrJohnboe7 жыл бұрын
Well in his defence he did, near the end, mention just that.....he was trying not to change anything but remove some packing to increase/improve sound. He says he didn't modify the exhaust flow.

@chrispownell13158 жыл бұрын
+Jason Procai It actually doesn't change the HP, it just makes it louder.
@alfrede.neuman86118 жыл бұрын
+Jason Procai You should be asking how much horsepower does it "cost you". That packing doesn't only dampen the exhaust note, but it helps keep the muffler hot. A hot muffler and pipe scavenges far better than a cold one.
@MrJohnboe7 жыл бұрын
Probably true to an extent but doesn't the insulation do that sufficiently? Most aftermarket cans don't have much for packing do they? Plus, he did leave 1/3 of it in there which may be as much as the aftermarket 'power increasing' cans provide.
@stevejohnson50356 жыл бұрын
Aftermarket cans don't increase power. if you're lucky, you might find one that doesn't lose power, but they don't help. The DO weigh less, and are smaller under the hood allowing better access in some cases. Probably the best thing they'll do is help shut down your local trails if you ride trails.
