Great talk, professor Titzer! As a mother of a two month old whose native language will be French and Korean and the language spoken at home is English, I’ve always been fascinated by simultaneous language acquirement beyond bilingualism. It’s interesting you recommend that we introduce at least four languages to the baby at the same time from birth! I look forward to more talks like this, especially the ways we can apply those scientific principles at home. Merci 👍

Thanks for your kind words! A point that I tried to make clear is that the languages may be introduced in different frequencies based on your goals. For example, from reading your comment it sounds like French, Korean, and English would be in very high frequencies and you could consider introducing one or more additional languages at lower frequencies. By doing this, you could keep open the window of opportunity for learning other languages at a higher level and also promote more efficient brain development. Thanks. Dr. Bob Titzer

@@YourBabyCanLearn Thanks for your reply, Professor. After watching your talk, we'll definitely consider introducing another language (or two, since you recommended introducing at least 4 languages simultaneously) If I understood correctly, just by introducing several languages, even the ones that are not our native languages, to our babies early on, they would learn those languages much more easily and at a high level later in their life. Is that correct? Anyway, thanks again for the great talk and kind reply.

@@HNaaa89 Hi. Thanks for the feedback and the question. Yes, as long as your baby gets enough good exposure to other languages in the first years of life, then it should help your child learn the language at a higher level later. For example, imagine your baby has one hour of Mandarin per week and one hour of German per week for four years starting early in infancy. This would be just over 2000 hours of Mandarin and just over 2000 hours of German over four years. At age four, possibly you will find a preschool that has a Mandarin class. Your child would have advantages related to pronouncing words and learning language patterns compared to children who would be starting Chinese at age 4. Possibly, your child will not study German further until high school. As long as you continue to review what the child learned in the first 4 years of life many times over the next decade, then the child would likely also have an advantage for learning German for two separate reasons. First, your child would already know French, Korean, English, and at least quite a bit of Mandarin. By knowing 3 or 4 languages, that by itself makes it easier to learn additional languages. Second, since your child would have been introduced to German simultaneously with at least 4 other languages in this example, then there likely would be an advantage for German because of the 4 years of experience during early childhood would help pronunciation and learning grammar. Hi Natosha, Thanks so much for your kind words. We're really happy to hear that your child is doing so well after using Your Baby Can Learn! We have received many thousands of comments from parents around the world and we sincerely appreciate that you took the time to tell us how your son is doing. It sounds like he is doing especially well, so we added the disclaimer below. :-) I am guessing that he also reads at a fast pace, but if not it is something you may want to develop soon. You could try the "fast reading" activities that I did with my own babies at thescienceofearlylearning.com/tips/early-literacy-milestones-and-tips/milestone-9/. As I mentioned in Part 1 of this talk, the two best predictors of academic success at the end of high school are early reading and early math skills. I list some suggestions for introducing math concepts at yourbabycanlearn.com/math-concepts/. We introduce mathematical thinking in Your Child Can Discover. Thanks again for your sharing your success story! I hope to get to meet you and your son at some point in the future. Dr. Bob Titzer Disclaimer: The typical results for infants and children who consistently use this series for at least 6 months are that they learn some written and spoken language according to their parents and according to almost all of the researchers. In one study, the babies learned more, but not significantly more, written and spoken language than a control group according to the researchers, but the parents in the same study reported that their babies learned written and spoken language from using the program.
