I suppose that was how I came by my own state of mindfulness. I was faced with a situation (albeit a bizarre one) that I could not escape that was so harrowing that if I didn't learn to manage the sheer existential dread it would have broken me. And although I lost that state of mindfulness as the existential dread faded and I fell into a sort of denial, I found that the mindful state I was in made me a better person so I came back to it.

Thank you for the apt review and the practical application of Nancy Baker's book through your personal life stories. I so appreciate your honest and deep sharing in this very public platform. I'm reminded how "intimate" Not Knowing truly is. Because of your sharing, I'm inclined to check out Nancy's book, "Opening to Oneness." I also recommend "Freedom Wherever We Go," by Thich Nhat Hanh. It was on my recommended reading list for the Spiritual Formation class I taught.

Wow, Sigman I loved listening to you, especially after not hearing your voice for so many years. I share some of your experiences as an adjunct instructor at the Community College of Vermont for over 30 years. I also struggle with the anger and resentment I sometimes feel towards the college. I know that adjuncts all over the country struggle with their 2nd/3rd class status and treatment. I'd love to talk with you about it sometime.

Shishin Wick was the head of the White Plum Sangha, and the man who, a few years ago publicly promised to support those hurt and impacted by the abuses of Dennis Merzel, who calls himself Genpo Roshi and was his predecessor as head of the Sangha, before being forced to step down when his abuses were exposed. In private however, in emails that have now been released, Wick made clear to actual students of Merzel's that he wasn't prepared to actually support anyone and that it was all just PR. Shameful and disgusting.

Good to hear this. So sad though that Zen Peacemakers have become such a grift, serving mostly the older, white and wealthy in recent years. Most on any rez, wouldn't be able to afford to do any of the events that ZP do.

Perhaps you could contact Larry Jissan Christensen who was MaEzumi Roshi's Jisha and then became a Dharma successor of Joko Beck....
