Jiu Jistu rules and is safe as long as you’re training in the right school and you have your diet and exercise dialed in. It takes a lot of work to fortify your body for Jiu Jitsu but it’s definitely doable if you have the time and discipline and it’s not all that expensive if you subtract out the cost of the Jiu Jitsu itself which is pretty damn expensive.

If you ain’t kissing ass and paying every month you ain’t getting promoted! I’ve been doing jiu jitsu since I was 13 not consistently because i grew up with a single mother but as I got older 22yrz n got a job I started going again went hard for a year and a half went to tournament n subbed all whites belts… when I got back I got promoted to double stripes first promotion after all the years I been at this gym. That was the biggest fuck you without saying fuck you. I put in years and I ain’t a scrub. I don’t mat bully! But I ain’t a push over or kiss ass!! I still love jiu jitsu that’s why I still do it right but as for Gi jiu jitsu I stopped doing that for a year n took time off again but when I go back strictly sticking to no gi

Black belt here - I do think Jiu Jitsu can be worth it for the right person. It's tough to stick it out to get your black belt, but getting a black belt is nothing compared to continuing to train after you get it. You think keeping your motivation to train at blue belt is tough? Try keeping your motivation to train at black belt when you are sacrificing time which could be spent on other priorities, and you are getting minimal returns - there comes a point where you wonder what the whole point is, especially if you aren't teaching it for your main living etc. That being said - Jiu jitsu is very good exercise, it will involuntarily push you to have very good cardio / endurance in ways you wouldn't doing normal exercise - which is very good as you age (both physically and mentally). You might have to adapt your style as you get older though to keep injuries etc at bay. You really need to love it after a certain point, I think you have to be slightly crazy or masochistic or something to continue for decades. Definitely weigh it up, and see if it's good for you.

90% of your training should be drilling. 10% should be easy rolling with control. It’s when you roll more than 10% and that rolling is all-out or higher intensity, rolling with white belts and people with no control, where things go wrong.

I've always felt like John Danaher doesn't like Catch Wrestlers. He never mentions Catch Wrestling, ever. And him doing this to a Catch Wrestler sort of confirms it.

Lots of bjj guys are roided up and are arrogant and think they're superior due to the online "alpha males" who rent their masculinity from a vial and syringe that promote it as the best combat sport ever, be careful on choosing a combat sport.

I tried to change my life for the better about 10 years ago. Through rolling with a meat head dink that was just there to hurt people, I blew out a disc in my neck. The dude but his forearm on my chin and put all of his weight down as hard as he could, blowing out my disc at c4,c5. It changed my life, for sure. I lost everything from my job, to friends, and family. When you are down, you find out who people really are. The club was one of the most prominent in Canada. No accountability. It only takes one time trusting the wrong person on the mats. To be clear, this wasn't an advanced class, or competition. This dickhead did this during a warmup roll

When you are 50 y/o plus switch to iaido. Iaido is cool, it will keep you fit until old age, and you learn quickly, because even practicing alone at home is very effective. No one will take away the good memories, and the honor, that you got doing combat sports when you were younger.

I think you’ve got to find a good gym that aligns with your goals, and you’ve got to be realistic about what you want to accomplish. If you’re older like me, a good sign is if you see other old guys showing up regularly and getting something out of it, and that applies to any martial art. Personally I’m biased in favor of Gracie schools because they tend to be less focused on competing and work more combatives, and more “practical” applications. There’s nothing wrong with more sport-oriented gyms if that’s what you’re looking for, but for me I’m just interested in building a solid grappling foundation to compliment striking without getting too deep in the more specialized stuff.

If you value your joints, never roll with anyone that you don't trust to let go when you tap, don't train through injuries, and don't train at gyms where you are just another piece of mat meat.
