Man, this really goes to show that Norman Wisdom really was the British Robin Williams of his day, as fantastic at drama as he was comedy.

This version of Stanislavsky is still played to this day; it has been repeated for 120 years. But Chekhov was very dissatisfied with this version and said, “Alekseev (Stanislavsky’s real name) ruined the play for me.” Chekhov wrote to Stanislavsky: “Lopakhin, it’s true, is a merchant, but a decent man in every sense, he must behave quite decently, intelligently, not petty, without tricks... Lopakhin is a gentle man, not a loudmouth, the rich speak calmly.” Chekhov didn't even come to the premiere

As a six year old Z Cars was part of my TV diet along with Rag, Tag and Bobtail and Tales of the Riverbank! I was born a few miles from Brian Blessed and in the way you get things mixed up as a child I thought my mum said she taught him at Mexborough Grammar School. This wasn’t in fact the case but he did know a friend of my mum’s who was one of my younger sister’s god mothers as she was wardrobe mistress at the amateur dramatics group of which Brian Blessed was a member. He mentioned her in his autobiography.

Judi Dench's sense of Shakespeare descends upon her from on high! She goes beyond mastery!

I'd argue against the whole thing about the Daughter not being Fancy's responsibility; when you join the Force, you swear to serve and protect all who need and require it, not just whoever the Higher Ups say need it, that's what reassures the Public that the Police actually care about the Community and aren't just some Corporate Fatcat's Personal Bodyguards simply because Lord Whathisface is a mate of the Chief Constable.

Maria Callas brought opera into the 20th century. She modernized it. She made it natural and believable. She was a multi talented. Multi lingual, highly intelligent person.

Judi Dench - born in 1934 - making her nearly 30 at the time of this episode, yet looks every bit a teenager

I've just finished Henry James's The Tragic Muse, which stresses the importance of craft and technique in the histrionic art. These actors exemplify this; their technique is as solid as a brick house.

Madame Ranevsky (Dame Judi Dench) is a spoiled aging aristocratic lady, who returns from a trip to Paris to face the loss of her magnificent Cherry Orchard estate after a default on the mortgage. In denial, she continues living in the past, deluding herself and her family, while the beautiful cherry trees are being axed down by the re-possessor Lopakhin (Bill Paterson), her former serf, who has his own agenda. - from imdb
