The mobility job security is the sad reality! I had to move 9 times in 24 years to stay employed through a crap non paying economy where there was never a real break in prices of things. Everything was always expensive as hell. Fuel, cars, houses and home loans stupid high then you start over. Then that happens over and over again each time with work goes south. The most painful recession sense the great depression that lasted a long time. The late 90's until 2015 was a decline and very very long recovery in Automotive and housing markets. Wow nailed that one. Not everyone had that issue yet most people had financial struggles during these years.

It's not just us. Nobody wants to be screwed over. Nobody wants to be micromanaged. Nobody wants to give loyalty demanded of them by an employer, when they know that it won't be reciprocated. Nobody wants to sink a lot of personal investment into an employee, when that employee regards you as a disposable replaceable asset. Nobody wants to be stuck in a rut. Nobody wants to be told how to do their job. Of course, I stand to be corrected. If any other cohort actually wants to be screwed over, exploited, gaslit and treated like trash in the workplace, well, I suppose that's their choice. Anybody?

As senior accountant, born in 1964, into a Real Estate Funds dep. I wrote an Excel macro algorithm everyday to automate sone stupidly fastidious works like booking interest into 5000 accounts, booking stationery invoices, cascading credits and interests into 200 company structures.... The dep. was moved to Poland, I resigned, and very young people had to take over my job. My Excell macros were not destroyed thanks to a Polish young guy who had a Phd in maths.... 8 months later, my job was still in the hands of 3 junior accountants, they smashed the Excel sheets a few times.... Their boss had to ask me to block their phone numbers !!

Late to the party. I’m Gen-Awesome (Gen-X). I had my bosses boss call both of us into his office to “chastise” me about not meeting expectations. I asked him what expectations and he gave a noncommittal answer. I asked if he was getting angry phone calls or emails from our largest client. He said no, just the opposite they’re VERY happy for a change. I said then tell me what you want and let me do it. I’ll let you know if I need you

Don’t forget the only pension most of us will get is the one that we create ourselves. My dad had his pension raided in the 80s after working somewhere for almost 40 years when the Reagan government started loosening their hold on corporations. Let them invest that money in unsafe ways. Between that and unionbusting, right to work lol, yes, we all need to look after ourselves and our loved ones.

Don’t tell me a process unless I’m on the wrong track. I’ll just get on with it. That’s what I’m here for, right? As part of the “we expect to be screwed,” I’m not sure many Gen X will hit the retirement home without getting laid off/ made redundant at least once. Hence reinforcement that companies aren’t loyal to me, so why expect that from me? And in actuality, I’m not sure Gen X expect a retirement! We’ve been working since we were legal to … and now, we’re paying for 3-4 generations in our households. So … I’m not expecting to retire, personally I expect to have some paying work/ income source till the day I collapse.

Gen x: don't tell me what to do. We've already done it a thousand times. We also see "bad managers". Constantly. Like forever and a day constantly. The vet definition of narcissism is a manager who "SIMPLY DOES NOT GET" that people so things their own way, and then they see that and micromanage themselves into bankruptcy. Worked at a pizza place. Started at the bottom and worked into kitchen Manager. Got a raise after 8 months. The 6 month point was the intended time, but owners and managers have no accountability. We joke, we laugh, we play, we drink, but we can clear a 7 o clock rush on an understaffed team like it's a Sunday breakfast. (Everyone's at church, there is no Sunday breakfast shift except the lone liberal with pink hair who tips very well but has social anxiety) But you get one of these boomer types who worry about nickels when they're losing dollars... Or a gen z who doesn't understand.. Literally any part of society except what they've seen online.. and it's back to explanations and "USE THE SCALE! WE CAN'T GIVE THEM TOO MUCH!" WHEN when it comes to portions. Like srsly? I can tell a 12 or 16 ounce dough ball from experience. ... And i short it by .1 to cut costs. Yay me? No. Everything gets slower cuz we use a machine. Shared amongst the 4 workers. Which shorts out if you move the cord. Prep takes twice as long as it used to. Costs rise. Labor costs rise. Ppl quit cuz they aren't getting their old hours. So i get promoted to kitchen mgr. Right? But it's a month past my raise as a line worker, and the owner days "ya just got a raise!" When i ask. ... Now, i let this slide for 2 days. Then my Birthday hits and he didn't give me a personal day. So i clock in, ask again after lunch rush, hear the same deal.. clock and walk before the wife was halfway home. Triple whammy, i say. I never, and by I, i mean Gen x.. cuz good Lord do we need the hours and never call off. So we never ask for a day off, but by jove.. i needed it so I asked. The place shut down a few months later. It was bittersweet cuz yeah i like the idea of revenge, but knowing the owner and narcissism? They still... "DIDN'T GET IT". Boomers, man.

I work in a company that is mostly Gen X and my direct team is Gen X and 1 Gen Z. My manager is Gen X and I think he might be my favorite manager of all. He leaves me alone. The company recently set up skill trainings. I’ve been through enough corporations, I didn’t have a care in the world that I was excluded out of training. I’d rather buy my licenses and get my CEU’s. I just smiled and didn’t say a word cause I know company will pay for my cue and state licensing and I prefer that. Then my boss set up my training and it’s a sales training presentation by a boomer blow hard “consultant”. It’s so painful and none of it is relevant today. I guess, that’s boomers play book to make it look like what they share is relevant when it’s not. My boss asked, what do you think of training. I said, “my thoughts I sit through training are, ok boomer” The boomer actually talk about shoe store selling. This present day, most companies entire chains are closing in 24 hours and this boomer talking about shoe store selling. I guess it’s a step up from when they talked about selling widgets. Just leave me alone, let me do my job, pay me my decent salary and benefits and give me my overtime. Do not even think of managing and micro managing nonsense. It’s not necessary. Gen X got screwed in every way possible and no one ever really talks about it. I figured why they named us Gen X. It’s right in front of us X. An X. It’s to cross us out, write us off.

Son ya'll have really got this wrong. You do not tell a Gen. X or to do anything. They will tell you to get fucke. Do not take orders. We are our own bosses if we don't like your business plan. Or your company in general. We will walk across the street and get another job just like yours. Reward them with training or other experience building some. We already have twice the experience that you will have in your entire lifetime. There's nothing you can give us. Or offer us. We're just biding our time at your company until the next rice and beans stage of our life comes around.

Don't stand there, looking over our shoulder. We hate that! It's a guaranteed way to get your ass kicked. If we need help, we'll tell you. When we're done, we'll tell you. It's okay to check it! And we'll gladly "fix" it for you. But you might be surprised! We tend to give more than you asked for. Don't expect us at the office party. Don't say "we're a family" about the job. We don't buy that 🐂💩! Most of us come from broken homes anyway. We've had jobs that played the "family" line, and treated us like 💩!!! Much as our real families do! So save the drama! Just don't go there! It's a job! Nothing more! Don't call us on our day off. That's OUR time! We've already done our part. We're NOT sla ves who want to live at the job. Don't expect us to bust our asses so YOU get a raise! Been there. Done that. Hated it. No more! Never again! We ARE loyal. But too many jobs have NOT learned to reciprocate! _Loyalty is a two way street!_ Same as Respect! We've experienced jobs were loyalty isn't returned to us!!! _Don't preach what you don't practice!!!_ There's more. This is just off the top of my head. Gen Xr of 67.
