I am probably the minority here but I watched this series over ten years ago and I've found another show that gives me these vibes. Legion. The abstract suspense and confusion that it radiates reminds me of The Prisoner. Excellent shows. Shows you piece together for a lifetime.

The story I heard was that he wanted it to be a sequel to Secret Agent Man, but there was some sort of copyright issues. But since he never mentions his character's name, he was able to imply it was the same person.

@alexander3015 I watched the movie off the back of your trailer, so thank you for making such this so compelling! The film's translator made an odd choice with the cop using 'Why'd you do all this?' - what he says appears to be closer to 'Why'd you choose me?/Why'd you bring me into this?', but I struggle with the nuances of the Japanese language sometimes. Some of the dialogue (and it seemed to be translated well) reminded me of a mix of 'Doctor Strangelove' and the dry and sarcastic anti-authority stuff from 'The Taking Of Pelham 123'. I can't think of anything similar to this very unique movie. It's a pity you weren't able to cut the movie's trailer back when it was released - it would have helped it a little at the box office! It's maybe the best movie of the 1970s in Japan, but unusually provocative, with such a touchy subject at the center. It's a pity it isn't better known. Sadly, I think Japan's current generation are probably even less receptive to (or tolerant of) such a directly satirical and critical take on life/authorities than the late Showa generation.

Producer / co-creator Markstein had left the show, and McGoohan had complete control, so he did what he wanted which, in this case, meant going full surreal theatre. It was in keeping with the hallucinogenic, psychedelic, revolutionary times. It made the series suddenly poetic as opposed to repetitively literal. In the end, you get out what you put in. In my case, I perceive that Number 6 has always been Number 1, figuratively-speaking, and this applies to all of us. As the Eagles sang, 'We are all prisoners here of our own device.' Once we realize that we, people as individuals and as society, impose our own shackles, we can remove the mask and be free. The final episode was hugely ambitious on McGoohan's part, and he deserved the opportunity to do it.

@@Itchigo2254 The screenplay and story was written by Leonard Schrader. You have to go watch another movie "Kiss of the Spider Woman 1985" also screeplayed by Leonard Schrader. The two movies are esssentially the same in form (you can even draw lines between the characters in the 2 movies). But Spider woman focuses exclusively on the hidden plot that was strongly hinted but never developed in the Sun move. They probably changed the plot halfway in the production, leaving too many characters and motivations vague or unexplained in the end.
