That is NOT "Contact cement"!! With contact cement, a thin layer of cement is spread on BOTH parts to be joined, left to dry a little for about fifteen seconds, then the two parts are pressed together. So what is the grey substance?

I know I don't do this type of work, but I have a question. Why not paint the pieces before you attach them to the different parts of the body. It seems like it would give you a lot better maneuverability and make it a whole lot easier to construct the character

Yeah you can. I usually make everything separately and then add it later. Right now I'm making a witche's treehouse and I made every separately. Then I can shape everything and glue it on. I use anything that'll get sticky. Clear Elmer's glue, wood glue, super glue, etc. 🤣 Does the job so I can't complain. Then I make sure to fill any cracks or gaps, etc with clay.
