If you want drill a hole dead centre and parallel learn a trade that involves working with metal

I get the stepping up drill thing to get a centre hole in the dowel; but what if you make the first drill at 85°, and considering the rest of the drill bits follow, don't you end up with a drilled hole 85° in the dowel as well? This video should be explained a lot better. Thx for the effort though.

Seems very incomplete. Might have thought about checking a few things after this. 1) How much vacuum pressure was lost? Relativity to this>? 2) What about extra need to clean out these holes / frequency-increase needs (follow up vid needed) 3) I missed seeing where you put the bottle opener. 😊

mmm good job I read the comments. I kept going back to the drilling of the block part as I couldn’t fathom what you had done, and you didn’t explain it very clearly.shame cos what you are teaching is a problem I’ve had on numerous occasions and would love to know what you did there at the drilling of the block phase cos it clearly works

I've built a few sound studios. It's the reverse of confining sound in a space; for a recording studio you want to keep sound out. In any case, the principle is the same: that you stop sound transmission with Mass. I.e, something Dense. For a sound studio the best is 12" of concrete. My suggestion for soundproofing for your vac cart would be to build the enclosure out of a couple layers of MDF.

You could do this much much easier with a disposable glove. Just fill the finger tip with ointment & slide it on

Thank you for the video. This is a great idea. I tried it on my Harbor Freight Bauer 6 gallon shop vac and it worked. The specifics of how I made it is a little different. I'll include them here for others who may try to duplicate what I have done. First, the exhaust hole of my shop vac was 2.25" ID, which was a bit smaller than the OD of standard 2" PVC pipe which is 2.375". So, I had to sand one end of the pipe to make it fit. In the end, I went a bit too far, so I added a couple of layers of blue painters tape and voila - perfect press fit without any screws. Doing the math like you did, the area of 2.25" hole is pi*2.25^2/4=3.976. The area of 0.5" holes on the inner pipe are: pi*0.5^2/4=0.196. So, one needs 3.976/0.196=20.286. holes. So I drilled 25 of them to be sure. I measured sound levels and I got 91-92 dbA without the 'muffler' and 85-86 dBA with the muffler, around 1 meter away, using an app on my phone. That's 5-6 dbA reduction with is about 50% like your case. I did run into one issue though - with the muffler and 25 holes, I noticed that suction power of the vacuum dropped significantly. So, I drilled a few more holes. In the end, I ended up with 41 holes (I just kept drilling and when I counted I had 41 total). This restored most of the suction power (I don't have a CFM meter to tell more accurately. Nevertheless, it looks like one needs more holes on the exhaust (like at least 50% more total area). I don't have a scientific explanation for it but I think it's because without the muffler, the air just exits the exhaust hole. With the muffler, the air needs to travel more torturous path and thru the little foam inserts. I'd love to hear a good explanation, if anyone has one.

Potential hearing damage: Prolonged exposure to sounds above 85 dB can cause hearing damage, making 95 dB a significantly higher risk level.

I was glad to see your presentation here. I have 3 psi chucks that is 2 Barracuda 2s and 1 utility chuck previously I used a PSI utility truck for all my work and produced quite a few bowls up to about 6" in diameter. I just bought two Nova G3 one was the full kit the other one with just one set of Jaws I think.

After being so careful to count your holes to preserve the 4.9 in² cross section for airflow, you then stuff your pipe full of foam baffles? I reckon that will restrict the airflow a lot more than the little holes. Also, dB is not an absolute measurement, it very much depends on how far away from the noise source you measure, and in which direction. You can't compare two measurements unless you are sure your microphone is in precisely the same spot both times. And along those lines, I also wish you had measured the noise difference just from redirecting the opening away from the phone. I.e., an elbow and a short pipe but _no muffler._ 'Cause I bet that's a lot of it.

DO NOT NEVER, EVER, EVER, NEVER HOLD YOUR DOWL IN ONE HAND AND DRILL INTO IT WITH THE OTHER (as shown, don't even think about it).
@bikersoncall6 ай бұрын
I don't need a hole in my dowels, I need punch centers for the lathe spurs, the trouble with wooden dowels, is that even though you have the punch flat ,dead center, it will wonder just like a drill bit, not because of the design of either, but because of the stubborn grain in the wood that will push the center punch or bit to the weakest part of the dowel end, and be off center, like 50 t0 70% of the time. This method in the video would work I'm sure, it's a good idea/concept. If any of you are going to try this, I think you need to get a Forstner bit the exact size of the dowel diameter, and go from there, the smaller bit, lol, may wonder on you, but a drill guide might help. You may have to do more than one 'rig' to get it right.

Geez... The "science" is useless... And this does nothing of the motor is plain and simple LOUD!! Buy a quiet shop vac. I have 3 different brands, and the ShopVac brand is the worst! Stanley is okay. Canadian Tire MasterCraft is the quietest, and good suction too!
@luca66357 ай бұрын
Not that easy. As others have pointed out, drilling the first hole straight is difficult due to the wood grain, which are going to deviate the drill bit off the wanted trajectory. And if you don't get that first hole right, then you have a problem. I find the best is to start by hand using a 1 mm think metal tool (not sure how it's called), then start to drill the hole slowly.
