@@wizarno My brother and I used to have an apartment together across the street from their headquarters and twenty years ago he got to be friends with the son of the founder and they spoke extensively about the history though I used to shop there as a kid before he was born and remember people used to leave their kids in the shopping cart so they could ride up and down the cart escalator but in the 1970's they did away with that for safety reasons. Mom never let me ride in it though and I was upset. Probably just as well. The building was an old brick factory built in the 1870's and was originally a textile mill. In the 1940's it was used as an army depot then after the war the founder of Anne & Hope leased the building and started his business. It almost went bankrupt about 22 years ago and they had to reorganize and got rid of the least profitable departments and eliminated their lower level which they leased out to Building 19. I believe that Anne & Hope eventually bought the building because they were leasing out parts of the building after their reorganization. About 2010 Building 19 went out of business and a flea market went in the lower level and then Anne & Hope through in the towel around 2015 and completely went out of business though maintained an internet presence for a couple of more years but what was left was bought out by someone else and then then went out of business. If you notice that Walmart has their floor plan set up so that you enter the left side of the entrance and you exit at the right directly from the cash registers. Even today many stores have the traffic cross paths. Anne & Hope was the first to do that. The owner of Anne & Hope got the idea from Filene's Basement in Boston. Filenes was a Boston based department store that also went out of business about 15-20 years ago. They were to Boston what Macy's was to New York. But at some point they realized that they had a lot of extra merchandise they wanted to clear out so they opened up Filene's Basement, a separate business. This was not quite a department store in it's normal sense. In the past, department stores would either send their excess inventory to a liquidator or they would simply have clearance sales throughout different departments. Filene's didn't want to do either. They thought that having clearance sales in the normal part of the store would make them appear lower class. So they literally built the basement out to be a clearance department all to their own. Many people, especially lower income people, would shop their exclusively for everything from clothing to jewelry to tools to toys to Christmas decorations. My parents met while working at Filene's basement. Dad worked the lunch counter and Mom worked the candy counter which is the exact place they met. Dad got the engagement ring at Filene's basement and paid $100 for it and Mom got her Wedding dress at the annual "Running Of The Brides." which if you are over forty you probably saw on TV news as that would often make the national news. At that point there were no department stores that were only discount. Sears was the closest thing but they weren't really discount so much as they simply didn't carry the upscale merchandise that Macy's or Filenes had. The founder of Anne & Hope got the idea of a department store that was like everything was always on clearance from visiting Filene's Basement. Prior to that the normal business model was pay $1 wholesale and sell it for $2. Anne & hope was the first to pay $1 wholesale and sell it for $1.50. Sam Walton improved on that by making deals directly with manufacturers eliminating wholesalers altogether so he could pay 50 cents and sell for 75 cents. Same Walton, upon getting his advice from the owner of Anne & Hope around 60 or so years ago made a gentleman's agreement with Anne & Hope to never open stores in New England in exchange for the advice. Note that within 18 months of the death of Sam Walton, Walmart opened their first location in New England which was the agreed upon Anne & Hope territory. When they did that was the death knell for Anne & Hope and within just a few years they were in trouble. Of course Walmart puts a lot of businesses out of business except now Amazon is starting to do the same to Walmart. Sorry about the lengthy history lesson but you seemed interested.
