My friend and I who at the time were about 13-14 years old got kicked off the Sub tour because we put the dummy mannequin in the open torpedo tube. Guess at that age you just go for giggles. thing was heavy was a feat for both of us. This is when the Sub was in Tampa on the Hillsborough River.

She gave me a birthday present a ride on the liberty bell aircraft when it came to Bakersfield California back in the day. When I was a kid, The Memphis Belle sat out in front of the National Guard Armory, in Memphis, Tenn. Theoretically sealed up, I could squeeze thru the Bombay doors (I was a scrawny little kid), so I spent hours pretending I was flying the plane. My family taught me to respect such things, so no, I didn't take any souvenirs, as I felt like that would be the same as desecrating a grave. Years later, Fred Smith, Margaret Polk and many others, began fundraising to completely rebuild the once great Bird, and upon succeeding, it was flown over "Mud Island", where she dropped a bomb load of Roses. ( I believe the commemoration was on May 17th, 1987). She sat outside, on that riverfront island, but many years later was moved elsewhere. On May 21st, 1989, I went to a WW2 Era historical party, held at the Annesdale Mansion (to raise money for the Mansion), and low and behold THE Margaret Polk was at the party selling and signing posters from the commemoration. I got her to sign my poster and it still hangs in my Dinning Room. She passed away less than a year later.

Ever since I can remember I have always been fascinated by how brave and courageous those who flew the big bomber was. Sadly, many men lost their lives fighting against a terrible threat to humanity. Thankfully we had enough airplanes and enough people to stand up to the German threat of world domination. Many were lost but enough got through and did terrible damage to Germany. When it was over, cities lay in ruin, ships were sunk, aircraft were shot down, and 5.3 million Germans perished. Those brave American men and the courageous RAF flyers together smashed and pounded until there was nothing left of the 3rd Reich. I am forever thankful to all who fought for freedom. I salute you all.

Imagine in the dead of night flying over the Himalayas freezing cold and hoping the old worn out engines won’t fail bc if they do, you will crash. The plane needs all engines running at 90% to keep it flying in the light air of 25,000 feet. The noise of the engines, the shaking of the plane and uncomfortable metal seat you must sleep in won’t let you sleep. You are tired as hell, cold and you haven’t had a hot meal and bunk time for weeks and soon as you cross through the mountains, the Chinese start shooting a battery anti aircraft explosive shells. Is it any wonder our airman came home with ptsd which was not even recognized or understood. This is what my dad went through and that’s why his life was destroyed and he was forever “AWOL” from my family.
