About 35 to 40 years ago, I worked on a house across the street from one of the horn players in The Tonight Show band. Everyday without fail, he would warm up his chops for an hour or so. We had a daily concert from him and enjoyed every minute.

The *Tonight Show* band is a great band but this is a disappointing reimagining of "Sing Sing Sing." It's only marginally recognizable as the same song.. Search out Gene Krupa 's close-to-original version on the *Ed Sullivan Show* to hear an amazing performance by the man who made this tune a classic. You'll find it on KZbin.

That big band is a vestige from the days of radio when every show either had it's own band or had the network ensemble on stage and TV talk shows began with that concept in mind.. It lasted because Johnny never warmed up to rock and roll and as long as his show kept bringing in the dollars he could have any band he wanted. But by the time he retired it was a dinosaur. Pop music had abandoned that jazz band paradigm 20 years earlier.

Speaking of old classics…yours truly. My music interests are very diverse. I have no regrets. My family doesn’t really get it when I listen to old classics. To each his own. Keep’em coming.

We had a partial look at something of the great Tonight Show Band when Johnny passed and Doc, Tommy and a few others did a tribute to Johnny on the Letterman show. They did a Tommy Newsom arrangement of Here's That Rainy Day.

I got to see a live taping of The Tonight Show about 10 months before Johnny left. Getting to hear these guys live was the highlight! This lady was right - they should have featured Doc and the NBC Orchestra a lot more!

I remember watching this live. I gre up listening to my Mom’s albums of the previous Tonight Show bandleader Skitch Henderson. I remember her talking about how “tight” the band was, how perfectly in sync their”attack” was. Mom didn’t care for Severensen. She said he was a showboat. Here is a playlist of songs from the albums I mentioned. kzbin.info/aero/PLbPoIGZ0muAfsPT8ug2z00oeLCLnXnKOh&si=8dW-DTBu-hj4zb3L

I wonder if Benny Goodman ever played any prison gigs. If so, there's a chance he might have played "Sing, Sing, Sing" at Sing Sing.

A lot of people wouldn't get these jokes. And so funny, the last one mentions Trump and this video was immediately followed by a Trump campaign ad. There are no coincidences.
