There is a way to kill this type of algae that I learned from the aquarium hobby.. Kill the light and the algae will die. So cover the tank for 3 to 4 days or maybe a week so that no light comes in.. Don't worry, the bacteria or the fish will not die.. You end up with the remains of the algae that can be easily removed or left for the fish to eat or the bacteria to break down.
@CrunchyFern2 күн бұрын
Thank you for the feedback! I’m familiar with the blackout technique. It’s easy enough to in an aquarium, but a bit more difficult for a pond. Either way the product shown in the video did the trick and I got rid of the algae.

Is it bad that I'm jealous of the frogs?? I wish I could have a little habitat like that to myself LOL~ It looks amazing! A beautiful little paradise! I have a dumb but genuine question though: do you ever have to worry about mold on the cork or the foam pads?
@CrunchyFern10 күн бұрын
Hahaha if you can find a shrink ray you are welcome to live in there! I hope you like to eat crickets. As for the mold: that’s why I added springtails. They will take care of any mold and frog waste in the tank.

I love what you did and would love to see an update in 6 months. Most builds I watch like this wait a few weeks or months before adding any animals. I would be curious what problems, if any, you encounter.
@CrunchyFern11 күн бұрын
There are a couple of reasons why you generally want to let a tank mature before adding animals. Allowing the plants to grow in a bit will make it less likely they get trampled by the animals. These frogs aren’t that big so I don’t worry too much about that. Also in general you should wait at least two weeks before adding fish/shrimp to the water. This will allow bacteria to grow that will break down the waste of the animals, otherwise they might get poisoned by their own waste. I my case I let the filtermedia sit in an established aquarium for a month prior to building this tank, so all the necessary bacteria are already present from day one. Still it’s best practice to wait a bit. I’ll definitely make an update video in a couple months to show how the tank has been developing.
@bakedmoss11 күн бұрын
I looove the frogs and shrimp !!! Would you recommend isopods as well if they're big enough to not get swallowed by the froggies?
@CrunchyFern11 күн бұрын
Yes! I do plan on adding isopods, but my colony isn’t that big as of now and I’ll be getting some more next week. But as the frogs like to eat anything that moves I’m not sure how long they will last in there.

I'd be very interested to learn where you managed to procure your egg-crate light diffuser. I spent over a month trying to source the stuff for a decent price, but the cost for one piece was honestly outrageous and I ended up just stacking my hard-scape out of rock and gravel (and glue).
@CrunchyFern11 күн бұрын
It wasn’t really cheap. I think I paid €25 for a 120x60 cm piece? Something like that. I found it in a salt water aquarium store.

Technically the true Frog family is the family Ranidae (Related To (Rana) Frog), with true frogs being the genus Rana that is the Latin word for Frog. The true Toad family is the family Bufonidae (Related To (Bufo) Toad), with true Toads being the genus Bufo that is the Latin word for Toad. Everything else is just colloquially a "Frog" or a "Toad", so can be referred to as either or. Fire belled "toads" aren't very closely related to true Frogs or true Toads, but are colloquially call Toads based on there superficial more true Toad like appearance, Fire bellied toads of the genus Bombina (Hummer) are a very basal (primitive) group of Anura (Tailless), and are very closely related to to the genus Barbourula (Little-strange) that are referred to as being Flat headed frog but also the Jungle toad, both being in the family Bombinatoridae (Related To (Bombinator) Hummer), Bombinator is a variant of Bombina meaning the same thing, to Hum, to Buzz. So if it's in the genus Rana it's 100% a Frog, and best to refer to it's closest relatives in family Ranidae (Related To (Rana) Frog) as frogs. If it's in the genus Bufo it's 100% a Toad, and best to refer to it's closest relatives in family Bufonidae (Related To (Bufo) Toad) as Toads. Anything elses in the order Anura (Tailless) can be referred to as being a "Frog" or "Toad" in common name.

@@Ons_TV All Toads aren't Frogs. The order name Anura, that they all belong mean Tailless, not Frog, not Toad. All in the genus Rana are true Frogs. All in the genus Bufo is a true Toads. Everything else is colloquially a "Frog" or "Toad".
