I don't care what are the political views and position of this man. He's talking about right, he's doing a right thing! The knowledge should be OPEN to everyone. If you made a cool software good for you - no one tells you that you should not benefit from it, or should not sell it for some amount of money - but what you should is to make it FREE, free not in price but in freedom, liberty which means you should not hide your software code and not restrict it. The knowledge that you got to make this software is not a private property - the knowledge is the product of the humanity. So it must be open to humanity

I was thinking of what Richard Stallman said about changing all government schools from windows to linux it will be free of charge and kids could learn better technologies. I wonder how much money is spend on non free software, where we could have our schools full of free software.

I really love free software. But companies are there to make profits. That is their mandatory purpose of their existence. Patents protect people from (especially from big companies) to steal your algorithm. If that algorithm is your MAIN value that you're trying to sell, huge companies have both the manpower and money to steal your original idea from your product and eliminate you from the market all together. Patenting does not contradict free software. This just reeks communism, which is (or rather was) his usual attitude.
@PieJacker18 жыл бұрын
+Kazathul Software patents are not just a negative to free software development, but a negative to all software development. RMS explains thoroughly in this speech: www.gnu.org/philosophy/stallman-mec-india.html
@neilbedwell77638 жыл бұрын
+Kazathul "I love free software but someone should be making commercial software instead"I wonder how different the world now would be if Eratosthenes could have a patent on his famous algorithm the Sieve of Eratosthenes. What if we applied the same to other algorithms that are so based in logic that we could almost call them a birthright?

@martinprochazka37147 жыл бұрын
How could you steal an idea, it makes no sense... If you treat people respectfully they'll make sure you have enough money for further development of your software.

Matthew Flannery was hardly a leader of anything and honestly hacking upper numbucta who cares where the hell that is council site is hardly crime of the century. AFP stick to the kiddie porn people, you are good at getting them and they deserve it. Honestly it's just all cringingly embarrassing for real hackers and ethical hackers alike. basically the AFP arrested an internet Troll and then trumpeted this to the world as some sort of victory over online hacking. Can't we all just forget it ever happened. Please!

yeah, and he needs food too, imo its ok if you sell your stuff somehow to survive as long as you dont press people into rules what they do with your soft , its all about the point of view, if you sell your software and say take it do what you want with it, why not??
@colcol75811 жыл бұрын
He never did. I used it way back in 1980 - 1981 and he never sold a copy to anyone. It was freely available both in the form of a .exe file and in source form and before you say that .exe didn't exist in 1980-81; this was on a DECSYSTEM-20 running TOPS20. In those days Emacs was written in Lisp with some TOPS20 assembler IIRC. Not something that would be easy to sell. I suspect you are thinking of one of the many copies that were spawned by RMS's version. MicroEmacs perhaps?
@colcol75811 жыл бұрын
Not so. I don't believe he ever sold a copy of emacs or any other software he has written to anyone for anything. He may very well do some consultancy but I think he is also paid for giving talks and presentations etc. although that is only a guess.
