Jesus Answers Your Best Questions Matt Sparling, Executive Pastor June 4, 2023 It feels like we are in a time of not just transition, but what Harvard Political Scientist Samuel P. Huntington calls a cultural convulsion. According to Samuel P Huntington, cultural convulsions occur every 60 years or so: Revolutionary period 1760’s - 1770’s Jackson uprising 1820’s - 1830’s Progressive era 1890’s - 1910’s Social protest movements 1960’s - 1970’s Vietnam war Kent State University shooting Women’s liberation and feminism Civil rights Our current era Climate change Gun control White nationalists / Black Lives Matter Me Too COVID / Vaccine deniers The church is not immune: Christian nationalism Diversity in the church Sexual abuse scandals 42% of ministers contemplating leaving ministry link Religious “Nones” jumped 7% in the last 10 years alone We are in an “in between” time of economic, cultural, moral, and political upheaval where the old doesn’t work anymore but we haven’t yet settled on what does work. The church feels like it’s stuck in this “in between” time as well. Two generations of “The Greatest Generation” and “Boomers” have either passed or are moving into retirement and the church is struggling to find its way in a culture that is increasingly skeptical of the church and its legitimacy to speak into the issues of today. All the old answers the church has given in the past that have legitimately offered help for previous generations are struggling to provide a good foothold for the next generation of millennials and gen-z. In fact, during a recent study done by Kara Powell and her team at the Fuller Youth Institute one teenager said that... “I wish the church would stop giving me answers to questions I’m not asking”. We need to stop and ask ourselves if the church is asking the wrong questions or worse providing answers for questions the next generation doesn’t even care about. *For more on this study see the book “3 Big Questions That Change Every Teenager” by Kara Powell & Brad McGriffin REFRAME: Instability can be a greenhouse for growth forcing us to put down new roots, sprout new branches, and eventually produce a harvest. Now is the time for those of us in older generations (Boomer, Gen X, and even Millennials) to "till the soil" breaking up with the old ways of "doing church" and sow the best seeds for the next generation of Kids and Teens (Gen Alpha, Gen Z). Those best seeds are the Bible itself, and the ministry of Jesus. A similar time was upon the followers of Jesus in the book of Acts. Let’s set the context: Jesus’s ministry is coming to a close. Jesus did amazing things, taught thousands, invested in 12 disciples, died on a cross as a rescue mission for humanity and rose again 3 days later conquering death and sin. But now, He is preparing to leave and send the Holy Spirit to be with his followers. Acts 1:1-8 NLT 1 In my first book I told you, Theophilus, about everything Jesus began to do and teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions through the Holy Spirit. 3 During the forty days after he suffered and died, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God. 4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” 6 So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?” 7 He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere-in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Jesus doesn’t answer their political question and he really never did throughout his life either. Jesus answers our best questions...the questions behind our questions. The questions the next generations (Gen Z and Gen Alpha) are REALLY asking. Questions about... Identity Belonging Purpose Question 1: Who Am I? Our culture says... I am... not ___ enough (rich, black, smart) My image / brand Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy spirit Comes upon you.” Jesus says: In Christ you are abundantly more than enough. “Faith is not about believing stuff; I insist that biblical faith is about being attached to Christ, bound to him, and participating in life with Christ and having your identity transformed by that participation.” - Klyne Snodgrass *For more on Identity and developing a robust understanding of Identity check out “Who God Says You Are” by Klyne R Snodgrass Additional scriptures to meditate on: Genesis 1:27 - you are made in God’s image therefore, you have value. Psalm 139:1-24 - you are fearfully and wonderfully made you are more than enough. Jeremiah 1:5 - before you were born, God knew you and had a plan for your life. Matthew 16:21-28 - as we deny ourselves and lose our lives in devotion to God’s story, we end up finding life. Mark 1:1-13 - as His child, you are precious. John 10:10 - Jesus’s purpose is to give you an abundant life. Romans 12:1-2 - we worship fully when we offer our whole selves as sacrifices to his will. Ephesians 2:1-10 - we are God’s masterpiece, created to do good works. Philippians 2:5-8 - Having the same attitude as Jesus (being a humble servant) means that God can elevate you to be abundantly more. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 - God has bought you, so you are valuable to Him. Questions for you or your group to ponder. When you ask yourself, “Who am I?” what sorts of words or phrases come to mind? How would your friends describe you? If I asked one of them to tell me “Who is ___?” what do you think they would say? How would you say your faith impacts your view of yourself? What would you have to do to elevate God’s voice above the voices of others (or your own) who are defining you? Add notes Question 2: Do I Belong? “Stop walking through the world looking for confirmation that you don’t belong. You will always find it because you’ve made that your mission. Stop scouring people’s faces for evidence that you’re not enough. You will always find it because that’s your goal...No one belongs here more than you.” - Brené Brown Our culture says... · I belong only if we agree. Acts 1:8 “And you will be my witnesses...” “The New Testament is more explicitly concerned with the identity of the individual, but even there the individual is never viewed separately, apart from the community, which is an indictment of the individualistic understanding of many Christians. Christian faith is not merely about me and Jesus.” - Klyne Snodgrass Jesus says: In Christ, you belong with Jesus and to love one another. The story of Jesus washing his disciples’ feet can be found in John 13:1-17 John 13:34-35 “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
