I really like this video, very old but very informative.

Old video, but still quite relevant. I started driving bus in the late 70s in the Army. Later (80s & 90s), I worked for several schools on weekends driving activity buses (everything from true motor coaches to traditional yellow buses). Today, in retirement, I am again driving activities for our local school district. A couple of years ago, while on a vacation, I was sitting behind the driver on a tour bus. She was a fairly new driver (well trained, good and safe, but new). She got into a real tight situation in an area in Dallas. I could sense her panic. I calmly informed her that I was a bus driver and talked her through the situation....slow and steady. After she got through it I told her, "Good job! You have the skills, you just lack experience and the confidence that comes with it. No need to be embarrassed or feel ashamed. Just remember your training and don't let anyone rush you." She notified the company afterwards of what happened, and they reviewed the on board video. I was offered a job by the company the next day! I turned it down...I'm retired!

Good to maintain a safe following distance to allow ample time to react to obstacles and brake accordingly.

Very true video. Knowing where your rear wheels are is very important so as to not cut corners or drive over the curb.

Something I will do on a new route is I will use google maps to size up intersections before I do the run with passengers. Anticipation, not precipitation!

Greyhound taught the 4 feet from the curb and they also taught the push-pull method of turning the steering wheel as this forced you to go slower and keep the turn tight. If you fly around the corner spinning the wheel you invariably end up wide leaving you open for a squeeze and a chargeable accident. And on the double left turn a cool thing they said about the purpose of keeping to the outisde lane is to look where you can see and block where you can't.

Good old training video. I passed the Commercial Class B with Passenger and Airbrake endorsements written/multiple choice test. This is required to the drive the VTA, Valley Transportation Authority, city bus in the region encompassing San Jose, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Campbell, Cupertino, Santa Clara, Milpitas, and the Palo Alto area. Very excited and nervous when I'll get to train behind the wheel.

There is another emergency scenario that may happen to the bus which is if it breaks down such as due to mechanical failure. Here is what to do if the bus breaks down. 1. Remain calm and do not panic as if you panic it will probably not help the situation and may make it worse but if you remain calm then you will be able to deal with the situation. 2. If you can do so and it is safe for you to do so then pull the bus off the roadway into a safe area away from traffic. 3. If you can’t move the bus off the road then turn on the bus lights or put warning flashers throughout the road so that way any oncoming traffic will be able to notice the stalled bus giving them time to stop. However while putting flashers on the road you should make sure that you will be safe by continually checking for traffic and looking both ways. 4. Assess the condition of your passengers and make sure that they are ok. If they are scared or worried reassure them. 5. Assess the condition of the bus. 6. Assess the situation such as by assessing the location of the breakdown and check to make sure if it is safe for the passengers to remain on the bus. In most cases passengers are far safer remaining on the bus rather than being outside the bus and therefore in most situations should remain in the bus unless it is too dangerous to stay on the bus. However if the bus is stalled in a location where it could be hit by traffic such as in a intersection or blind curve or hill or highway or if the bus is stalled on railroad tracks then you and the passengers should evacuate the bus. 7. In the event you have to evacuate the bus then use the safest and useable exits such as the front door or other exits. Passengers should leave their stuff on the bus as the stuff can be replaced but the passengers can’t and by taking the stuff it could waste precious time that they should be using to evacuate. Once you or the passengers are out of the bus move to a safe location away from the bus and 100 feet away from traffic. If the bus is stalled on railroad tracks then once you evacuate the bus then run towards the direction of a oncoming train or trains at a 45 degree angle as that way if the train hits the bus then you won’t be hit by flying debris from the bus. Do not attempt to restart the bus and never attempt to stop a train by waving at it as trains can’t stop quickly and by the time it sees the bus even if the train applies it’s breaks it is too late for it to stop in time. 8. Once you have made sure that your passengers are safe and have secured the scene then call a tow truck and wait for them to arrive.

Examples of when you have to evacuate the bus due to a breakdown. If the bus is stalled in a area where it may be hit by traffic such as on a highway or in a intersection or behind a blind curve or hill where traffic can’t see you or if the bus is stalled on the road during bad weather that prevents traffic from seeing the bus or stopping such as due to fog, snow, ice, or wet or slippery roads. If the bus is stalled on railroad tracks.
@jfournerat1274 Жыл бұрын
Also remember in most cases it is safer to stay on the bus rather than evacuate it either because there is no hazard at the scene or it has been dealt with or if the hazard makes it safer to be on the bus rather than out of it such as if the bus is in contact with downed power lines or if there are downed power lines nearby or if the incident happened in a thunderstorm or winter storm or snow storm. However there are occasions where you will have to evacuate the bus due to there being a life threatening hazard on or near the bus or if it is safer to evacuate the bus rather than remaining inside it. Situations where you have to evacuate the bus. If the bus is on fire. If there is smoke coming from inside or outside the bus. If there is a danger of fire such as leaked fuel at the crash site or a nearby vehicle is on fire close to the bus and you are unable to move the bus away from the burning vehicle. If the bus is in danger of being hit by oncoming traffic due to its position in the incident scene such as if the incident was on a highway or in a intersection or around a blind curve or hill where traffic can’t see the bus or if the incident occurred during bad weather that makes it difficult for oncoming traffic to see the bus or stop in time such as if there is fog or snow or ice or if the road is slippery and you are unable to move the bus in a safer position such as due to the bus being damaged as a result of the collision. If the bus is in a body of water such as if after being hit by a vehicle it lost control and then crashed into a body of water. If there is a danger of the bus falling into a body of water such as if it is positioned in a area where it could move such as if it is hanging off a bridge near a body of water. If the bus has a rollover such as if after being hit by a vehicle it lost control and then rolled over or if the bus was hit by a vehicle such as a truck or bus that caused it to roll over. If you have to evacuate the bus you need to know which exits are on the bus and which exits you should use. Front door exit. Use it if it is useable and there is no danger at the front of the bus such as if there is a fire at the back of the bus. Window exits. Use them only as a last resort if the other exits are blocked such as if the bus has rolled over or if the bus is in a body of water. Remember once you evacuate the bus move to a safe position that is 100 feet away from the bus. For instance if the bus is on fire move 100 feet upwind of the bus to avoid being affected by fire or smoke, if there is a danger of being hit by traffic then find a safe place that is far away from traffic and move there, and if the bus is in a body of water then get out of the water and to a safe area away from the water. Once you are in a safe place do not leave the area and do not renter the bus for any reason until it is confirmed by police or other authorities that it is safe to do so or if authorities or police tell you to do so or allow you to do so.

Driving a bus is all about timing. If you’re out of sync with timing, you will just not drive right. Timing to turn, timing to brake to a stop, if you cannot estimate time and distance, you will be forever fighting that bus.😢
