Fishing our local creeks takes a ton of work and is not for the faint of heart. But it can be magical

Baldy mesa ?? Ive been out here scouting the Santa Ana mountains From Black star canyon to Ortega highway and nothing .. any advice ?
@Surf1763 ай бұрын
Just the usual stuff, look for water source near by and cloud cover / early morning. If there's hawks around it's usually a good sign as well as animal trails. Good Luck

Was there a few days ago. Unfortunately it is extremely blown out as of this august. Pretty much unfishable
@Surf1765 ай бұрын
I've been up a couple of times this year, saw it blown out due to flow earlier for sure and a huge landslide further up the river/ canyon, the whole mountain came down.

there's the little kern rainbow and the little kern golden. two different trout. Also none of those were goldens btw
@Surf17611 ай бұрын
As far as I know there's no fish named "Little Kern River Rainbow", there's native Kern River Rainbow, California Golden and Little Kern River Golden. I think the fish in the video are diferent amounts of hybridized Little Kern Golden with KRR trout and stocked fish from back in the 70's. Some of the fish looked like strait Rainbow Trout 1:03 and others had more spotting below lateral line and defined parr marks 2:20 and 4:20 ,. The Kern River Rainbow has different coloring in my experience so not sure if that is in the mix. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4CZfGV9Yp10hZI . I believe these fish are certainly some percentage Little Kern River Golden but not pure by any means based on location. caltrout.org/sos/species-accounts/trout/little-kern-golden-trout-2 .
@williemickbillie10 ай бұрын
@@Surf176 sure pal. sorry to break it to you though but none of those were golden. they are very distinct even when hybridized. I've been fishing right there for decades now and have caught some good ones but none of those were hybrids even
@Surf17610 ай бұрын
//@@williemickbillie I think you're quite possibly right, I've caught Rainbow/Golden hybrids that are very distinct(although CA golden onSF Kern) but I figure there are varying degrees of hydbridization, sounds like you've done a lot of field research. I can tell you they are definitely not Little Kern River Rainbows :)

I like the dog cam idea. Too bad he lost it in the bushes. Was it hard to locate? Also, I glad to see you recalled the importance of picking up your shells. Let’s all play our part in packing out our trash that we brought in.

Thanks I'm going to try a more secure cam and use the more stabilized Gopro. I couldn't believe I found it!..... It was so exciting I didn't think about the shells at first but yeah I did a full shell search once I realized I was littering everywhere.

@basscartel32562 жыл бұрын
If you’re going to use gloves use gloves with a rubber base that allows the fishes natural oils to stay on them. This is by far the stupidest way of handling fish

Brings back memories when I fished all the creeks in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, I called it Trout Hunting 'cause of the stealth needed to not spook the holes.

Not many spots left with the drought but still some hidden spots in Ojai..not sure you can find creek trout in Santa Barbara county anymore!

Great content, just concerned about handling fish with a glove on. I spend time with Pro Guides and the community frowns on touching fish with anything other than a wet hand or net. It removes their natural slime, bad for the fish. Good stuff man!

Whats up with using that glove to hold those fish? Thats not cool bro.

Did you field dress it first or you hiked the entire deer to your jeep first?

I’ve fished most SoCal creeks with a fly rod over the years. So much fun watching rainbows and browns explode on the surface. Personal best a 12 inch brown! There are bigger ones out there, 18-20 inchers. Thanks for the video

I know exactly where that is, I’m very familiar with that area and have fly fished it for years. Winter season in that area can be very slow. I’m glad you are using barbless hooks, I hope they a single hooks too, since that is what the regulations are for that area. Artificial lures with a single barbless hook
@Surf1763 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's slower in the winter but I haven't had a day like the good old days in a while. You're wrong about the single hook. When this was shot it was barbless and artificial only, the single hook was not a requirement, I very specificly researched it. Now it's not even barbless, check the book for '21, single shank is specified for certain species like Sturgeon and it was not at that time and now the area is simply artificial lures only, not barbless.
@TheGhillieGuyYY4U3 жыл бұрын
@@Surf176 there are sings posted in that area. Barbless hook may not be a requirement, but I’m pretty certain it’s artificial lures with a single hook. I’ve fished that area for 20 years or more.
@TheGhillieGuyYY4U3 жыл бұрын
@@Surf176 cool bro. Nice vid. Single, barbless hooks are better and don’t harm the fish as much when releasing them. I liked your vid since it didn’t mention where that spot is. But you have now put that information up in a response to me, tisk tisk. Places like that won’t have fish in them if everyone keeps a couple. I bet you’d have better luck in that area if it was to become catch and release while using only artificial flies. No need to reply, I’m done...

Nice vid. I used to do similar small stream fishing in So. Cal too. You'd be catching those fish that are ignoring your spinner if you get a nice little 3 wt/6 foot fly rod with floating line and 6x tippet. Small emerger and nymph patterns are deadly when working upstream and casting to likely spots above you. Barbless please!
