Wow those are some chunky G and D strings, I’m playing down at .42 .30 .20 .13 in GDAD and AEAE. Sounds great though, do you feel you are getting more low end response with the heavier strings?
@tenorguitartime5 күн бұрын
Yes, it's a trade off-heavy gauge gives a nice bass tone, but loses a little sparkle.
@oneseekinglight94919 күн бұрын
Just picked up one of these second hand. I generally play ukulele and wanted this for the bigger sound so have tuned to DGBE. I love the sound and the steel strings but the narrow neck is a big problem coming from baritone ukulele.

I hear ya! I think nut width may be the most important and individualistic preference that will determine if one likes their instrument or not.

I must say I dont think those string gauges would be a very good choice for me! It will depend on your own perspective and want you want to feel under your fingers but personally I would aim for a far more even tension on all the strings. On a 23” scale for GDAE we could look for 20lb on each string to give and even feel and a total of 80lb tension. That would be 12 p 20w 30w and 45w
@tenorguitartimeАй бұрын
@@foxfish7115 That make absolute sense to even out the tension. I was hoping to just go up one gauge on each string, but that's all I had at hand. I kind of miss the chime of the unwound A string.
@foxfish7115Ай бұрын
@@tenorguitartime I have spent many hours working out string gauges, I do use the on line calculators but I also built my own manual version. The end choice is often a compromise of feel, sound and the instraments integrity! Certain models of tenor guitar like the Blueridge can take higher tension strings without concern but, I would still match the tension or each string. Most Tenors seem to work very well with 20ld per string but shorter scales with need slightly thicker strings to obtain the same tension as longer scales . CGDA is slightly more difficult as the high A will always be a taught but 9p 14p 20w 30w works well. For a heavy set or for a 21” scale 10p 15p 22w 34w is good.

I bought a Mint condition 1931 17 T from the original owner a few years back. Paid the princely sum of $300. Sold it to a an elderly friend who owned a local guitar store. Her house was robbed and over 50 instruments were taken including her 1929 17T.. I sold mine to her for $300. They are very cool instruments.
@tenorguitartimeАй бұрын
Hi Jeff, Wow-$300! things have changed. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of those instruments. But, yes, it's kind of amazing that it's 87 years old and still sounds strong. This one certainly isn't close to mint!

Nobody strings up an octave mandolin in octaves. You need to put matched pairs on there. How's the workmanship? Semi-hollow with a block down the middle? Fretwork? How's the action? Is the neck straight and true? What size frets? Can you play some modal Irish/Celtic stuff? What does bridge pickup sound like? Or both pickups. Can you crank up the Princeton and run through some Keith Richards rock & roll vamps? 5ths tuning is great for that.

Is there an advantage of GDAE tuning over CGDA? I just got my first acoustic tenor guitar and am wondering what tuning to use.
@tenorguitartime3 ай бұрын
Hi Ryan, The choice of tuning really depends on what frequency range you prefer. As you know, all fingerings, scales, etc that you know on CGDA can be used on GDAE (fifths tuning). I like GDAE the best because it has nearly the entire range of a regular acoustic guitar. My lowest GDAE note is the same as fretting the low E string on a regular guitar at the third fret. You only lose E, F, and F# notes. I want a strong bass sound. For certain application, CGDA will be more useful. Say you are playing with a bass and a regular guitar player.They already have the low end covered, so by using CGDA you will have your own, higher, frequency range to contrast with the other instruments. A lot of people chose Chicago tuning because it's the same as the high strings of a guitar. They are happy with the familiarity transfering their guitar knowledge over to the tenor. But, their lowest note is the same as the open D string on a regularly tuned guitar (not very low). One more thing. I like GDAE because I used to play mandolin, so all the notes, chords and scales are in the same place and Called by the same name! I try them all but always come back to GDAE tuning

Thanks David. "Zingy" is a good description of CGDA. Thanks for subscribing! Even though I have mostly GDAE lessons, as you know you can certainly still use them for CGDA-same fingerings

Hey Todd _ these chord shapes and the CAGED system are really helpful. On my acoustic I dont get much past the 12th fret...maybe I need an electric tenor guitar! I'd like to use this to learn to play arpeggios so I'll look for your video on this topic. Thanks for the lessons
@tenorguitartime6 ай бұрын
Hi Jay, yes electric tenors are awesome with the extended range and with how easy they are to play. I think that the Eastwood Classic tenor plays with the feel of an acoustic with these ease of an electric, and is maybe the most all around practical model for me. I haven't played them, but the Fanner tenor guitars look cool. I think they are based in S. Africa and have reasonable prices. Some of their models look really small though. This might be good or bad... I will posting on Patreon a CAGED chord shape sheet with each Major, minor and 7th inversion. Thanks for the question!

I do love the tenor but my major problem with it is that you can’t escape that high string sound, any chord requires it so its always ringing out and over powering the other strings.
