I really enjoyed this process you all took. I know I'm viewing it 12 years later, but it is still helpful and applicable.

Can't the degree requirements be adjusted by racial background so that equity in graduation is reached, much in the same way that admissions are scaled for racial background ?
@tne-dm5eu
@tne-dm5eu 2 жыл бұрын
Equity doesn’t change the goalpost; it facilitates the student’s starting point and journey so that everyone has an equal chance to achieve said goal. Changing the degree plan requirements is probably not the best approach to equity because students should leave with the same knowledge and skills as their peers. Changing their requirements (especially based on areas that already experience discrimination) would only exacerbate the issue of inequity.

We are not allowed to criticize women for anything, including being pokey in the bathroom. Likewise, we are not allowed to compliment men, including being speedy in the bathroom.

Why would anyone have an opinion on what people are doing in the bathroom?

This is great! Thanks! I'll be referencing some parts of this keynote on my campus, so I identified some helpful timestamps: 5:15 to 7:20, intro and thank you 7:20 to 16:25, what is equity? Not an "add on" or program, it's a commitment 16:25 to 19:15, the challenges are more than academic (overview) 19:20 to 22:35, HS grad rates, implications, and pipeline 22:35 to 25:46, imposter syndrome and belonging 25:46 to 29:50, demystifying trauma 29:50 to 43:35, from micro-aggressions to mico-affirmations 43:35 to 49:15, how colleges can be equity minded 49:15 to 53:40, what do staff need to do and self-care 53:40 to 1:01:30, Q&A advocating for students with disabilities navigating invisibility and spokesperson pressure perceived safety with gender neutral restrooms evaluating imposter syndrome addressing inequity in a department other than your own

Hearing about the 'birth' of academic advising as a field of study is fascinating. More importantly, the review of approaches as linked to different theories on advising was helpful for helping us advisors formulate better approaches for our students.

The Advising Activity is very creative and flexible. An Adviser needs to know all about an Advisee and have very well developed psychological skills. I like the advising philosophy theory! Thank you very much, this is very helpful.

@8:56(kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4eslWOGnrGljqMm56s) The following quote appears in support of recognizing the importance of volitional choice in education, particularly as supported, today, by #AcAdv: "[Student academic choice] ... forces the student to become conscious of what he is doing, permits him to become a partaker in his own work, and makes him perceive that gains and losses are immediately connected with a volitional attitude. When such a consciousness is aroused, every step in knowledge becomes a step toward maturity" (Palmer, 1885, p. 398). It took me a bit, but I finally found the full reference for this quote. Then, I started reading more of the paper ... and enjoyed it. Anyhow, I thought I'd share... Palmer, G. H. (1885). The New Education. In E. C. Smyth, W. J. Tucker, J. W. Churchill, G. Harris, & E. Y. Hincks (Eds.), The Andover Review (Vol. IV, pp. 393-429). Boston, MA: Houghton, Mifflin & Co. Retrieved from play.google.com/store/books/details?id=uYgfAAAAYAAJ Palmer also references this same idea (1887, p. 25) in a later publication ... which is also interesting: Palmer, G. H. (1887).
