The chassis is aluminum with a matte black finish. Some thought and care were put into the design for sure. It's not perfect, but definitely not bad...

Kit, thanks for watching! The Torso S4 is an Experimentalist's dream machine! It chops up sounds (granular processing), bends them with morphing resonators, and lets you sample and manipulate the results endlessly. 1 Imagine evolving textures, warped melodies, and sounds that shift and morph before your ears. 2 It's a deep dive for sound designers, and while Torso Electronics is a newer company compared to Elektron, the S4 shows immense potential with its unique sound sculpting capabilities but it has encountered some turbulence with its firmware (but mostly flushed out as of 1.2.2).

Yes its more stable than ever (not perfect). I made another video today with a sample that was over two minutes, plus laid down 2-3 more tracks + modulation... no crashes.... 1.2.2 is the winner of the bunch

@VINYLCRATE While testing the Torso S4, I've encountered an intermittent display issue where the screen occasionally goes blank despite the unit remaining powered on. Based on my observations, this appears to be software-related rather than a hardware malfunction, as the system remains responsive during these episodes. The issue typically resolves itself without requiring a hard reset. Apart from this display anomaly, I've put the S4 under demanding conditions, and the current firmware version has proven to be stable. All other features and functions perform as expected, with no notable performance degradation or unexpected behavior.

I have got a terrible ground noise when the S4 is silent - any idea of what that could be? it goes away when I unplug the power supply - I am on 1,21

Riu, Thank you for reaching out regarding the ground noise issues you're experiencing with your Torso S4. I'd like to help you troubleshoot this problem. First, let's isolate the source of the noise: Remove all audio input/output cables and USB connections, leaving only the power supply connected. Set the S4 to tape then select the monitor button and check if the noise persists. If the noise continues, test the unit with a different power outlet, preferably in another room, to rule out power-related interference. If the noise disappears after removing the audio cables, I recommend two potential solutions: 1) Upgrade to balanced cables, which provide superior noise rejection through differential signaling 2) Install a ground noise isolator as a signal buffer before the audio inputs. It provides superior noise rejection through differential signaling From personal experience, while I haven't encountered this specific issue with the Torso S4, I use a ground noise isolator with my Ableton Move to effectively eliminate similar interference. @@lofifren hi I tried different cables, different part of the studio, I also unplugged all my studio equipments which are not noisy - the units is emitting an audible ground noise through its output - only the headphone output is clear and has no ground noise.

You could try using a ground noise isolator but honestly, from what you've described, it sounds like there's probably something more serious going on with your S4's hardware. Reach out to Torso about getting this covered under warranty. If it's still under warranty (which it probably is), they should fix or replace your S4 for you. That's going to be your best bet for getting your gear working to perfection.

An afterthought came to mind.... I rarely use the headphone jack directly on the S4... I am either passing audio though usb via Ableton Live or passing the output to the digitak or another device... So it might be worth seeing if the issue occurs "headless - or headphoneless" if that is a word :-) All the best

Hi Lofi Fren, I'm Giacomo and I'm writing to you from Italy. I've had the S-4 for about a week, connected to Ableton with USB (not jack cables) and set as an audio interface together with my Quantum Hd8 (main audio interface) in a MIDI AGGREGATE. My idea is to have the sound of an instrument (Synth, Piano, OP-1 and Moog) enter into each track of the S4, so as to have the possibility of "sculpting" the sound directly, live, for each instrument. Then have the sound of each track exit on individual tracks, from 1 to 4. In this case the S4 becomes a real LIVE sound modifier! I'm getting there, I'm almost there to the correct routing to have the perfect setup... Questions: - When I have this setup (even with only samples for each track, I don't play live), and I go into the mixer...if I lower or raise the volumes this change has NO effect, the volume always comes out at maximum, even though I see the faders of the S4 move.... Why? Thank you very much!

The initial upgrade was rough, i had some hidden files that i had to remove via terminal... besides that it has been smooth sailing... I also rolled back from 1.2.1 down to 1.1.0 and back up to 1.2.1 for the demo... No crashes yet... hearing mixed results from others on discord.

I hope things will settle down now that the factory reset is complete. If issues persist, you could try rolling back to the most stable version you used, like version 1.1.0. It might also be a good idea to drop a note to Torso for additional support. Fingers crossed everything stabilizes soon!

"Quick note about Overbridge: In hindsight, I would have updated all my Elektron devices before installing the latest Overbridge update. I ran into an issue with my Analog Heat + FX and Analog Rytm, where I had to manually upgrade the firmware since drag-and-drop via Transfer wasn’t working for some devices. That said, it's all part of the process-I'm embracing the journey!"

You are welcome. It's cool that you are interested in buying and Analog MK2 its a workhorse for sure. The gray model is the original color for the Analog MK2 series, first introduced in 2017 when the series, including the Analog Four MK2 and Analog Rytm MK2, was released. The black model, which came out later in 2020, was introduced as a refresh maintaining the same core functionality.

Thanks for watching ++ the compliment! The Torso S4 is a really cool sculpting sampler that’s perfect for capturing and transforming sounds. It blends old-school tape-era workflows with modern tech, making it a fantastic tool for creating unique soundscapes and compositions. As for my visual, it shows the dominant frequencies coming from the S4 or the Elektron Digitakt, rather than just the gain.

what happened at 9:30 just proves the value of honesty. all those who review the S4 w/o being honest about its condition - just like Torso themselves - do no good for our scene and for the market. comeon. the device is not ready for prime time. instead of doing free promos for Torso, and instead of being their unpaid beta tester, you should've pushed them. silence before all buttons work. no demos before bugs got ironed out. etc etc.

Thanks for watching and for your comment! Yeah, at 9:30 in my live session, the S4 crashed, and I had to call it like I saw it in that moment as it was unexpected. I get where Torso is trying to go with the S4 and there’s some cool stuff in there, but it definitely needs to be more reliable. I'm enjoying it for what it is right now and hoping it gets better with updates. I appreciate your thoughts and totally agree that honesty is key in these reviews. Hey The Life is a Party (Cool Name), You are right... I may need to send it back under warranty. But it is partly my fault, as it occurred after I purchased the deck lid. I left the FX Heat on during its initial test fit of the deck lid, and I got distracted... I came back to a snowy, hot screen :(

Yo GhostFace, Well, let's call it a badge of courage, haha! Here's the story: I just got myself a fancy new PL-2 Protective Deck Lid to give my Analog Heat some armor. I put it on while the unit was still on (wrong move), and then I wandered off like a distracted cat (taking care of some house duties), only to come back 10 minutes later and find the screen had turned into modern art. Luckily, it’s just cosmetic. Lesson learned: always give your gear the love and attention it deserves!

Dave, They are both great machines, but it really depends on your workflow. Digitak II can go into the nuances, but it only plays samples (does it really well)... Remember that the Polyend has its own synth engines (3, I think)... But to be fair, there is something EPIC about the sound of Elektron Rock on my Fren'
