Can anyone imagine Mae West allowing herself to be dubbed. If she couldn’t sing this opera herself she wouldn’t be doing it- or I’m no judge of character.

She was an extraordinary and intelligent woman, far ahead of her time, in 1949 The New York Times said: "Mae West is an American institution. Like Donald Duck, Chinatown and General Grant's Tomb, you have to see her at least once. once in his life."

While female stars 10-15 years then her younger struggled to maintain their youth - she owned her appeal at any age. I don't think any other actress of her time approached her ease and confidence level. Amazing woman.

Mae West was absolutely gorgeous; beautiful eyes, teeth, etc. I've heard commentators say she was homely and unattractive!?! WTF?! Are they blind???? She may have been as hedonistic as they come, but she was a wonderful person. A true diamond in the rough.

Helen Weinstock @ Can't believe anyone can call her homely and unattractive. I don't think that the men of the 30's would have agreed. She was the sex symbol of her time. By the way, she had an exceptional voice! I'm really impressed.

And she looks way younger than she was, I was shocked to find out she didn’t start her film career until she was almost 40, even when she was in her 80s, she still looked 20-25 years younger. She definitely lived a very fun carefree life and lived young at heart, I feel like that was her secret to looking so great for her age

Wow! That's a great voice. You're right. She could have made it as a singer. She was really such a rounded performer: comedian, sexpot, singer, actress and even playwright! By the way, her comedic timing was as good as Lucille Ball's who is considered by many to be the best female comedian of her time.

Mae West was always the first person to laugh at herself in the characters she created and that's what makes her writing so brilliant , she was in on the joke and it was always hysterical , she gave the parts she played courage and dignity in fighting against odds not in their favor and succeeding as she did in life ! and this particular aria is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written and she does it magically so that I'm sure Saint-Saens in heaven must have been trilled by it ! and if you don't believe me , KZbin it - she's incredible in it and sings it with grace and charm and humor and gives it an element the professional singers could never hope for without the venue ! in other words she was talented to a point which is almost unbelievable - but the films are the proof - she was a genius !!!!!!!!! and always a star !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The reason I will always love Mae West is because she was the first actress to address the African American actors in her films as contemporaries and friends, and it was her personal suggestion to do so. She had black friends in real life so she felt why not in her movies. While all other movies showed whites in elitist roles and blacks were subservient, mae was down to earth and saw those characters as human beings just like anyone else. This was rare in the 30's. This is what added to her being a trail blazer and ahead of her time.
